So, 2019 Juyo results are coming out now. It is my understanding that this was an especially challenging year to submit. Did anyone have a passing result they would like to share? I just missed the window on two of my swords and did not put anything through in this year's shinsa. Fingers crossed that someone here has had, or if about to receive, some good news.

Best regards,

Ray

Fantastic, congratulations! You are the first pass I've heard from yet. Would love to hear details when you are ready, either here or my PM if you like to share further. Again, very happy to hear the good news.

Thanks Ray! I took a punt on a healthy Katayama Ichimonji naginata naoshi katana of good length but a bit rusty. All it needed was a good polish!

Curious if they give a reason for a fail with Juyo?
Not representative enough for the smith...or not among his best works or condition or.........?

Once in a while they seem to have a reset session where it becomes very difficult and then over time standards relax a bit. This is just my feeling but this seems to have been this time as I am hearing from some Japanese dealers that they got 0 through entirely, I heard lists of failures and the makers involved kind of shocked me that they would not pass. And items of good quality.

In my case I submitted two that had past reference Juyos and both rare and both better than the past references and one of these went through but the other didn't. So it says to me that the standards in this shinsa are higher than in that shinsa.

Failure is not necessarily related to the item being wrong or bad. They don't give reasons but I gather you might be able to get some explanation of the thought process if you bring it in. In every session there are 3 groups, the first of which is automatic pass, the second of which is this shouldn't have been submitted, then the work is done in the third group which are real candidates. Now for whatever reason, sometimes competition between blades submitted by the same smith, sometimes because of a desire to reduce the number of blades accepted (my assertation) these true candidate blades can be accepted or denied in the majority. This is what causes a high or low volume session.

Those blades may all be tried again and may pass the next time around.

My feeling then from what I am hearing is that this is just going to be a low item count session. My one that passed was grouped with submissions of 8 other people and it is the only one that passed in that group.

And the simple answer to the question: you just get a notice that it was not accepted or that it was. Not accepted does not mean never, it means try again.

Can anyone tell me if there will be a Shinza team at one of the US sword shows in 2020?
I have a sword or two to submit for Hozon.
Thank you, Charlie

Hello Charlie1,

Thank you for the update, NTHK is coming to San Fran in 2020. Looks like I will be making plans to attend the show and Shinza.

Thank you again, Charlie

Fresh off the press  :) :  the results of the 65th Juyo shinsa are published on the NBTHK website:

https://www.touken.or.jp/Portals/0/pdf/shinsa/第65回重要刀剣等新指定品発表_1128.pdf

Apparently 138 items were selected out of 1341 submissions:

Token:  101 passed (out of 1003 submitted)

Toso:  8 passed (out of 45 submitted)

Tosogu:  29 passed (out of 293 submitted)

Thank you both. I just did a proofreading pass and made some important corrections. There are still some portions of items 69, 73 and 83 that I still need to address.

Best regards,

Ray

Additional updates above, and as far as I can take the translations without further assistance.

Tosogu are their own thing, so if anyone would like to take a stab at the tosogu translations please feel free to post the descriptions here.

Best regards,

Ray

Yes, you're absolutely right Matt. Unfortunately the 24-hour period has passed and I cannot edit the post. If any of the admins can make that correction it would be appreciated.

57. Katana

  • Mumei: den Iwato Ichimonji
  • Nagasa: 70.7cm
  • Sori: 1.2cm
