brannow Posted January 7, 2020 Report Posted January 7, 2020 Hi All, I thought I would share this Manchurian naval sword I picked up a few weeks ago. Its the only one Ive ever seen so its got to be pretty rare. Anyone else ever seen one before? Enjoy! 3 1 Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted January 7, 2020 Report Posted January 7, 2020 That is the most bizzare thing I have ever seen! What's on the nakago? Quote

16k Posted January 8, 2020 Report Posted January 8, 2020 That’s a nice sword. I love the koshirae. First time I see one like that! Quote
vajo Posted January 8, 2020 Report Posted January 8, 2020 Nice sword indeen and very interesting. Please dont lay you swords on that stone. Use pillows to lay it down. Quote
Stephen Posted January 8, 2020 Report Posted January 8, 2020 I trust Bill completely when it comes to the sword. as far as the koshi goes it looks like the ones ive seen on massive sayas with a wheel on the drag. They were made in the islands not Japan, i must be the only one seeing the Emperor with no clothes! Quote
BANGBANGSAN Posted January 8, 2020 Report Posted January 8, 2020 Very special! Thanks for sharing! Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted January 9, 2020 Report Posted January 9, 2020 I saved the pics of that baby for my files! Quote

Bruce Pennington Posted January 9, 2020 Report Posted January 9, 2020 正恒 (Masatsune) (real name) 天池 鈴一郎 So, seems to have been made by the Japanese for the Manchurian navy! I know so little about that side of the war. I know there were actual Japanese personnel working with the collaborative forces, and they would have had their own gunto. I wonder if this is an example of that? Or were the Japanese making gunto for certain echelons of leadership on the Chinese side? Much of what we see are the swords made BY the collaborators, and the quality is obvious. Quote
brannow Posted January 12, 2020 Author Report Posted January 12, 2020 Because of how the mounts are configured, it was probably a Manchurian officer attached to the Japanese navy. 2 Quote
Stegel Posted January 13, 2020 Report Posted January 13, 2020 Not meaning to de-rail this wonderful thread of Bill's, i thought this may/may not be related in some way. A Very Last- Last Ditch Navy sword, and as with Bill's, i've never seen another. I'm of the impression that these along with the Army versions may have all been Manchu constructions. All have lower grade Blades that are made by smiths and not "machine" made as such. Some are signed, others are not signed. This, along with the photo's are from a collection belonging to "Trenchwarfare" from the GunBoards Forum. Quote
