  1. I agree, once they start nailing the kissaki and proper proportions it will be a minefield out there.
  2. If I hadn't recently made a purchase I would jump on this, very nice piece at a good price.
  3. Andrew Ickeringill should be able to do an appraisal and window for you, if you aren't already aware of him.
  4. Good quality koshirae always a plus, mei isn't raising any instant alarmbells. Hard call in that polish.
  5. If it's priced at gimei levels absolutely, it is a very quality looking piece.
  6. The one thing that always sets off alarms on these is the tsuka almost looks blurred or sandblasted, the real NCO's are usually crisp and bold and well defined. It's hard to really pin down, just doesn't sit right with the eye. Otherwise that is dangerously good to newcomers or unwary collectors looking for that ebay goldmine.
  7. Reminds me of the nomenclature of German WW2 weapons in the west for decades; "Schmeisser" for the MP38/40, when Hugo Schmeisser had no involvement in the design of the gun. "Spandau" for the MG34/MG42, left over name from WW1 era MG08's. Type 3 is just as erroneous in light of official designations by the IJA and hopefully will be viewed as such by collectors eventually.
  8. Yes, up to customer and what stock the sword supply store had by then.
  9. Pure alcohol works wonders on the more stubborn bits of gunk and staining as well.

    Lamination

Sometimes it seems like he has gotten Youtube comments and this forum mixed up.

    Lamination

I never said it existed or didn't exist, I was simply asking for some sort of reference or fact to back up such a controversial opinion. However if all you have is Strawman arguments to bring to the table, so be it.

    Lamination

There was alot of research done during the development of the Koa Isshin Mantetsu swords, including cross sections of some very high quality swords. Very interesting read: http://ohmura-study.net/998.html
  13. Fatal. An unlisted flaw like this is completely unacceptable and is grounds for a refund. I would not have a problem if the price and listing reflected it and you got a steal, considering these aren't combat/martial arts swords anymore there is no risk beyond problems reselling it.

    What Is This?

Yes, nothing more than a wallhanger. I'd be interested too, they often have some funny things on them.

    Lamination

You can't simply make such a blanket and controversial statement with no associated proof or reference.
  16. I would say likely it was a massproduced blade, the mune is flat. Still a nice find, worth keeping a hold of.
  17. You need to start collecting contacts in customs by the sounds of it, that's mental. Mind you customs/police are ludicrous here, earlier in the year there was a big auction of the Cowra War Museum, lots of swords and WW2 gear. Anyway, cops come down before the auction starts and sieze virtually all the sabres and swords with D guards (some nice looking Kyu Gunto among them) because they were "dangerous weapons". I assume they thought crooks would pull the swords out and use the handles as knuckle dusters.
  18. Well try and get a refund and invest that money into some reference books. I think quite a few of us have been where you are, research is the key!
  19. Nice work David, personally I have found success with either leather or any spare seppa in my parts box. Good idea to mark them with date for any future collectors.
  20. Wow, great find! And in army mountings as well, very unusual.
  21. Two menuki seems more suitable for Chinese made swords that often don't have the same quality control (often have cracked tsuka) compared to tsuka on custom/Japanese koshirae. If it's a good quality koshirae and your Sensei believes it's safe then leave it as is.
  22. My immediate thoughts were Nambochuko, such a large aggressive sword for a gendaito smith. It reminds me of a sword discusses here on Darcys site: https://www.nihonto.ca/hasebe/
  23. I was struggling to find any indications of Ichimonji in those photos. What gave you the idea it was Ichimonji school?
