  1. Either a chinese fake or a poor quality original destroyed by acid etch.
  2. Same long Sarute on another Kai Gunto by the same smith and most importantly with a surrender tag attached to this long sarute:
  3. Mine is from a fairly early sword. Beyond that I haven't seen any others.
  4. An original with holes instead of boars eye:
  5. Eagerly awaiting photos of this sword!
  6. I suspect there could be at least 3 lost Masamunes tucked away in there...
  7. Here is what Chris had to say:
  8. The blade condition doesn't look like it was used as a machete. That Generals sword is quite unique, do you have a higher resolution version of it?
  9. There appears to be a real one in the translation section: http://www.militaria.co.za/nmb/topic/28112-translation-and-horimono-help-for-gendaito/
  10. The handle can be professionally rewrapped for a few hundred dollars if it completely disintegrates.
  11. Mei looks like a Sukesada or one of the Osafune smiths.
  12. Meiji/Taisho era traditionally made blade.
  13. My conclusion is he has a Japanese smith making Gimei for him, if you look closely all these swords have the same forging pattern and overall workmanship & the Mei is cut by the same hand for each one.
  14. Please stress to him he shouldn't swing it around, the Tsuka is probably not safe anymore. Otherwise, fantastic gift.
  15. Many fighters had a storage compartment in fuselage, if a pilot was to carry his sword it would be in there when moving to different airfields. There are accounts of pilots carrying their swords with them (especially in Kamikaze missions) but for all we know it could've been propaganda or isolated cases.
  16. The first impression from Chris Bowen is that it could be viewed as historically important & he is sending inquires.
  17. Average soldier height must be taken into account as well. Shin Gunto over 40 inches are a touch unusual.
  18. The swords don't look quite right to my eyes.
  19. It does have Kanteisho, comparable to NBTHK Hozon and goes further than a simple confirmation of Mei.
  20. Link here: http://www.Japanese-sword-katana.jp/katana/1910-1040.htm Seems quite extraordinary that a Koa Isshin cleared NTHK Shinsa, is anyone aware if NTHK specifically is putting original WWII swords in a separate certification section?
  21. Neil, getting there but still quite blurry, I would suggest a tripod or some method of stabilization. Dark background is good.
  22. Dale can we please see the Koshirae this sword came in?
  23. I'm assuming this is the man and his service record:
  24. It's odd they all copied one rare and unique example for all the fakes: http://ohmura-study.net/735.html
