  1. The only Yamashita sword I'm aware of is the one in Westpoint:
  2. Good eye, I wouldn't let that one go either.
  3. Extremely fascinating! I always thought they were given to smiths by local Daimyo for exceptional service or producing high quality work for the province. The only smith in my hands with a title is Musashi No Kami Kunitsugu who also had the title Musashi Daijō Fujiwara Kunitsugu, I wonder if smiths had to submit again for higher rankings and pass muster? It does removes a little of the Mystique if it was all so simple as applying for a drivers license.
  4. If you had this professionally rewrapped it would look great. It's unfortunate the original binding is gone on such a rare sword but you may as well have it done nicely now.
  5. Any plans to sell this one Ray?
  6. Yes, Kissaki has been reshaped a fair amount as well. Shame.
  7. A nice sword regardless but extremely tenuous deduction.
  8. Majority of these Last Type swords have had Mantetsu blades in them.
  9. Did you get this from ebay?
  10. Another example from Bills site & ebay listing:
  11. It has been constantly done for centuries & done right as we speak in Japan and other countries. As long as it is a professional job I see no issues if the Tsuba is of nominal value.
  12. Three listed Seki Kaji Tosho signing Yoshinaga, here are the other two: 嘉永 (Yoshinaga) 堀江 仁六 義永 (Yoshinaga) 長瀬 国一 None listed in RJT program.
  13. Photo's of the whole piece would be good, especially if the full tang and any small stamps you find. I'll leave the translation to someone more astute but you are correct, a WW2 era officers sword. If there aren't any visible stamps it is most likely traditionally made and of greater value.
  14. That's extraordinary, was about to post the exact same thing myself Kyle!
  15. Personally I am more than happy with either for simple authentication and attribution of a sword that has not previously been papered or is Mumei. Once high quality swords and big names get involved NBTHK really seems to be the final answer.
  16. Same one Chris, I pinch myself every time I admire this sword. I agree Steven, Santa gets quite uncanny if we write nicely to him
  17. It does indeed look to be riveted into the suede, is there any metal inside the suede part? If you could check the obverse side of the Mon all would be revealed.
  18. My guess is Muromachi Yamato Tegai.
  19. I recently acquired one of these, I think they are so rare/unknown nobody on ebay knew what it was...
  20. A belated xmas/birthday present to myself, complete Kai Gunto by high level Gendaito smith Komiya Kunimitsu with quite rare retention cord:
  21. Someone will have a beautiful sword in their collection now. I hope these are not parting ways with you under any unfortunate circumstances, Jean.
  22. I doubt the police would go to the lengths of taking off the handle, unless the owner knew the signatures and had them recorded as photos it would be a difficult task for the police to track it.
  23. I would carefully inspect the area where the original Mon has come off & post some pictures.
  24. Hi Nick, I would suggest getting the General to type up the history of how he acquired the dagger (even better if it's on personal stationery).
