Ken-Hawaii Posted March 12, 2020 Report Posted March 12, 2020 The sister of a friend in Los Angeles was hired to clean out the house of a deceased person, & to keep & sell any of the contents. She found the following sword, & since I know nothing about military blades, I would appreciate any info that I can pass to her: Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted March 13, 2020 Author Report Posted March 13, 2020 Nope. What you see is what I'm likely to get. The sister is not the brightest bulb on the tree, & was about to trade it for a McDonald's Big Mac, until my friend told her to hang onto it. So I doubt she'll be smart enough to do any disassembly. Quote
Stephen Posted March 13, 2020 Report Posted March 13, 2020 Have her mail to me and we'll get them best value. Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted March 13, 2020 Author Report Posted March 13, 2020 Doubt that sister will do much unless she has money in hand, Stephen. I'll see what my friend can do to her hands on the blade. Nothing we can tell from the photos? Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted March 13, 2020 Report Posted March 13, 2020 Late war Type 98, blade is probably Showato. 1 Quote
Shamsy Posted March 13, 2020 Report Posted March 13, 2020 Open work tsuba is slightly more promising than if it were closed. Could be a standard mumei machine blade or something a little better. Hard to tell. 1 Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted March 13, 2020 Author Report Posted March 13, 2020 Thanks for the input. I assume it's worth more than a Big Mac, right? Quote
ChrisW Posted March 13, 2020 Report Posted March 13, 2020 Tell her you'll trade TWO Big Macs for it! Ha! Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted March 13, 2020 Author Report Posted March 13, 2020 Sent info to my friend. Suggested they send it to me, so I can get more info, & even post it for sale here. Time to wait & see how dumb sister is. Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted March 13, 2020 Report Posted March 13, 2020 It’s a bit “rarer” than most as it has the patented saga drag. It’s got a painted Stuka handle - no same. I’ve only seen that done a couple of times. So a mix of higher-end fittings and lower end (paintedtsuka). They sell from $500 to $900. Without seeing the nakago, I’d put this at the $750 range. 1 Quote

Ken-Hawaii Posted March 13, 2020 Author Report Posted March 13, 2020 My friend is the smart one, Brandon. It's the sister who is dumb as a stump. 2 Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted March 13, 2020 Report Posted March 13, 2020 Bruce that isn't a patent Ishikuze, the bottom od the leather has deteriorated leaving the wood saya exposed. Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted March 13, 2020 Report Posted March 13, 2020 Bruce, JU87 Stuka? You know that 4 out of 3 sword collectors are dyslexic!!! Bruce that isn't a patent Ishikuze, the bottom od the leather has deteriorated leaving the wood saya exposed. Yep. Upon closer examination, I can see the error of my ways. I think I'll retire for the evening, gents! 2 Quote
vajo Posted March 13, 2020 Report Posted March 13, 2020 The blade is out of shape polished. Someone has grinded it and give it away. I don't think it is the lost masamune... Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted March 13, 2020 Author Report Posted March 13, 2020 Never would have guessed that! Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted March 15, 2020 Author Report Posted March 15, 2020 Sister sold it for a nice dinner, without even paying any attention to my friend. Probably the equivalent of $25. Ah, well. Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted March 15, 2020 Report Posted March 15, 2020 A fool and their Gunto are soon parted, I hope you told her she could eat for a week if sold to your friend. 1 Quote
BANGBANGSAN Posted March 15, 2020 Report Posted March 15, 2020 Well, wonder how she reacts if finds out she lost a few hundred bucks for her sell. Sister sold it for a nice dinner, without even paying any attention to my friend. Probably the equivalent of $25. Ah, well. Quote
Ganko Posted March 15, 2020 Report Posted March 15, 2020 The bell curve has quite a range to it. 1 Quote
ChrisW Posted March 15, 2020 Report Posted March 15, 2020 Sorry you have to deal with people like that Ken! We don't get to choose our siblings unfortunately. Quote

"The brightest bulb on the three"; thanks Ken, I did not know this english expression, it made me laugh! Quote
Bruno Posted March 15, 2020 Report Posted March 15, 2020 Sorry you could not get this sword for the price she sold it. Quote
