Michael 67 Posted October 16, 2020 Report Posted October 16, 2020 I need help . If someone is offered a tanto with the signature Hideaki, Mikasa battleship, please think of me. Today I was at the German customs to pick up my package with the Tanto. The package was opened at customs and was empty. It was opened on the way and the tanto stolen. The seller is serious, I've known him for a few years. I have some pictures. Please keep your eyes open. Maybe it will be offered somewhere. Thanks for the support. Michael 2 3 Quote
Brian Posted October 16, 2020 Report Posted October 16, 2020 Really sad to hear that, and to see that it was deliberate. I hope you get it back. I make my sellers triple tape parcels now...basically make it so difficult to open that they give up. Even taping the inner parcel to the outside. Just a tip. There are evil people out there. Quote
vajo Posted October 16, 2020 Report Posted October 16, 2020 What the hell! Please give us all informations you have and make a report on the police. From which country the package came Michael. Brian we need a site Stolen Swords Quote
envocat Posted October 16, 2020 Report Posted October 16, 2020 This sucks big time, is the parcel insured? Either way my fingers are crossed and i hope it'll turn up soon. These are the worst case scenarios that really put me off buying internationally. Such low-lives out there. Quote
Michael 67 Posted October 16, 2020 Author Report Posted October 16, 2020 if the tanto is found, I will donate $ 150 for nmb. 1 Quote
raynor Posted October 16, 2020 Report Posted October 16, 2020 Absolutely disgusting behavior. What is wrong with people? What did the customs office have to say for themselves? Quote
Michael 67 Posted October 16, 2020 Author Report Posted October 16, 2020 The customs office says the post is responsible. On Monday I will hand in all the documents to customs and then go to the police. 2 Quote
Babu Posted October 17, 2020 Report Posted October 17, 2020 I'm not sure if it's true for everyone but my friend who works at our post office stated that when they are scanned as part of tracking they are weighed so it should be relatively easy to determine at what part of the journey the weight changed and put it down to a specific depot.then to the operative who handled that delivery shipment. So them getting away with it is slim. Quote
Jean Posted October 17, 2020 Report Posted October 17, 2020 Yes Babu, when you send a package it is weighted at the post office, mainly for the stamp duties. If it is sent abroad you have a specific form to fill in and the weight is written on it. But in fact who cares, a lot of packages are stolen each year... the way packages are handled by postmen makes me vomit... late example: my wife was expecting a package yesterday and using the tracking system this morning it was written that it has been handed over to our concierge who accepted to take it on our behalf. Perfect, the only problem is that we have no more Concierge. Our is badly ill and out of work, he did not see any postman yesterday. So where is this package... 2 Quote
mywei Posted October 17, 2020 Report Posted October 17, 2020 Terrible! Was insurance taken out on the package? Quote
vajo Posted October 18, 2020 Report Posted October 18, 2020 Something about the insurance. Insurance sounds nice, but i can tell you a story that happened to me. I sold a blade to italy. Rusty old thing. Worth was 120 EUR (incl sending costs). The package never came on to the hands of the buyer. I make an search report on DHL. After a while i got a mail, that the parcel was handled over to the italien post. So i must fill out an italien search report. By the way international law says the buyer take all the risk not the seller. The seller wanted his money back. I had now stress from two sites. The italien post says they give the package to the sending adress. I asked now DHL for the insurance. They said no - nothing because it is not clear where the package was lost. And they gurantee that the package was handed out. What now?? After all i sent back the money to the seller minus sending costs. I lost the blade, 98 EUR and some nerves. Insurance makes only sence when you sent in your country thats my experience. It is allways a risk to sent with these private Post companies over a border. As the german post was a state company such things never happened. In further times the postman was a highly reputated person. Everyone thrust the post. But as they go private its only a job. Loosy paid, with a lot of employes that not very thrustfull. And the prices go higher and higher for shipping. Quote
Babu Posted October 18, 2020 Report Posted October 18, 2020 Be that as it may if the post office lose a parcel that's one thing. If a parcel arrived empty that's a criminal offence although they may try in defence that it must have bust it's way out if the packet in transit. It's a difficult one. One of the things I've noted is that when we send swords away to a specialist to ship to Japan for say shinsa they always ask us to low value the item to $100 so they don't have to front import duty This is a big worry for me for just the reason above and insurance. When my sword gets returned to me I will ask Bob to declare it's full value including any polishing cost as I will not pay duty on my own goods being returned and I want the protection. Quote
Michael 67 Posted October 18, 2020 Author Report Posted October 18, 2020 Chris, you are (unfortunately) right. DHL is a disaster. I am always concerned about whether the package I sent will arrive. I think some of the members know this feeling. (a long time ago) postman was a respected trustworthy person. 2 Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted October 19, 2020 Report Posted October 19, 2020 Trust me that it's no better in the U.S. I sent a new laptop computer to my sister, in its original box, & insured for $500. It got to her, with the box opened, & the screen smashed in. The post office refused to even open a case, let alone pay the insurance! I went to their Inspector General, who just referred me back to them. So, I'm meeting with our Congressman, who I happen to know, & we're going to get some people fired, federal employees or not! 1 2 Quote
John A Stuart Posted October 19, 2020 Report Posted October 19, 2020 Good for you. They will make people jump through so many hoops that they give up. Standard legal process. Give Mazie a call too, big gun or is that shogun, haaaaa. John 1 Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted October 20, 2020 Report Posted October 20, 2020 Unfortunately, I view her more like a loose cannon, John. Quote
16k Posted October 20, 2020 Report Posted October 20, 2020 What a shame. Post offices have become worse since the Covid-19 episode I think. I used to never have an issue for years with the post, now it’s problem after problem. Something tells me this will surface on European auction sites. You should monitor them closely, Michael. Quote
Michael 67 Posted October 20, 2020 Author Report Posted October 20, 2020 DHL Express, EMS, nobody is responsible. Standards only, I should wait for an assessment from the appraiser. Really? Jean- Pierre, I will do that. I hope all members do too. Quote
Michael 67 Posted December 27, 2020 Author Report Posted December 27, 2020 After a long wait, I called ems again. First ems claim that no mail with photos has arrived, then ems told me that it is not possible to get money from ems, only the seller can get the loss reimbursed. I bought a lot from the seller, unfortunately he has now disappointed me very much. The seller does not reply to my mail. Money is gone, Tanto is gone. Please keep an open eye. Thanks Quote
vajo Posted December 27, 2020 Report Posted December 27, 2020 So sorry for you Michael. Thats the way it goes allways when this things happened. And one idiot have now a sword and didnt know nothing to do with, playing around a while and sell it further... I hope the tanto will bite him. Quote
ROKUJURO Posted December 27, 2020 Report Posted December 27, 2020 The same happened to me recently with a handmade cooking knife from a Japanese friend, TARO ASANO. I have a tracking record saying that the parcel was handed in, but i never saw it. And normally it should not have come to my address as it should have gone to the customs office first. So not very logical. EMS says they are not responsible although the loss happened on German territory. I have to deal with the seller, but Japan Post refuses and says the loss was not on their territory. It seems insurance is just an easy way to make money on consumers. Quote
Mister Gunto Posted December 29, 2020 Report Posted December 29, 2020 Really sorry for your loss. Lets hope someone here can spot it if it turns up on eBay or the like. Most postal employees take their job very seriously, but like any big organization, there are thieves and bad apples in the mix. Also, at this time of year they hire a lot of temporary employees to help out with the extra holiday parcel volume. They hire those guys pretty quickly, and don't do much in the way of background checks like they do for regular employees. I don't know about Europe, but here in the USA we always see an uptick in mail thefts, internal and external, at this time. 1 Quote
