Bruce Pennington Posted January 7 Author Report Posted January 7 We've seen some 'hail in rain' designs before, but I thought I'd post this one, found on a late-war T98 on ebay 1 Quote
Mark S. Posted May 13 Report Posted May 13 Habaki on recent purchase. 2 piece silver foil. Maybe clouds & rain? 1 1 Quote
ROKUJURO Posted May 13 Report Posted May 13 If you hold the sword in correct orientation (i.e. tip-upwards), it would be more like rain and puddles on the road. 1 Quote

Bruce Pennington Posted June 29 Author Report Posted June 29 Posting for discussion's sake. I've been imagining this style pattern as representing a stone wall, but this one makes me wonder. strange for a wall shape, unless the artist just ran with the idea and modified it to enhance beauty. Jim Manley Posted July 7 Report Posted July 7 Another interesting dragon habaki. Looks Aztec. 4 2 1 Quote

ChrisW Posted July 10 Report Posted July 10 Not as beautiful as the above, but here is a habaki from a Yasumitsu sunnobu tanto I just picked up: 3 1 Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted August 17 Author Report Posted August 17 Another Mt Fuji habaki showed up and I thought it would be interesting to see the 3 I have on file together. Wondering why they all have the same two crevasses. Seemingly identical depiction of the mountain. Here is the only photo I could find showing more detail of the mountain, and I can see 3 points at the top. So, that must be what they are depicting. 4 Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted August 21 Author Report Posted August 21 WOW! That is gorgeous! Thanks for posting. Quote
Hokke Posted August 21 Report Posted August 21 Not traditional, but one I like that I had made for a shinsakuto 2 1 Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted September 6 Author Report Posted September 6 An interesting one posted by @Lewis B HERE. Crescent moon and star?. I see the same image on a few Islamic flags. I think it's a planet that actually makes it's way around the sky each year and gets close to the moon. Bugs me a little, as it is physically impossible for a star or planet to get close enough to the crescent for such a depiction, as the moon is actually round, whether you can see the shadowed part or not. Sorry, just a little pet peeve of mine. Ha! 1 Quote

Sorry, just a little pet peeve of mine. Ha! My best bet is that the habaki represents the 3 celestial bodies ie sun, moon and stars. With the silver of the polished blade showing through the design it would be reminiscent of the moon and a star in the night sky. But you're right it would be impossible to see any celestial body in that precise position relative to the moon. From AI In Japanese art, the sun symbolises imperial authority and vitality, the moon represents beauty, impermanence and enlightenment and stars symbolise guidance, fate and the passage of time. 1 Quote
Lewis B Posted September 8 Report Posted September 8 Here's an unusual habaki. Is the inscription a poem or incantation? 3 Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted September 8 Author Report Posted September 8 Yes, something different! Can you read it @Bugyotsuji? Maybe @uwe or @SteveM? 1 Quote
SteveM Posted September 9 Report Posted September 9 There's nothing on the other side of that habaki? I can only take a guess at the meaning (employing a superficial word-for-word translation, which are usually wildly inaccurate). The ringing of the steadily-pounding hammers And before me Like autumn clouds The water (mist?) rising from the white-hot metal But...it doesn't seem very poetic, unless its a bit taken from some classic text that I don't know about. 5 1 Quote
