antiquegallery Posted January 21, 2020 Report Posted January 21, 2020 Help definition original or not? Japanese NCO sword type 95 https://photos.app.goo.gl/2j3fPCyP89spxJk67 Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted January 21, 2020 Report Posted January 21, 2020 Arem, Shamsy or Stegel might correct me on this, but I believe it's a very good replica, probably from Poland. They are making some very good copies. A couple of examples from a legit one will show you some differences. The fuller grove on Tokyo/Kokura blade tips always mirror the shape of the kissaki (example below). And the designs on the tsuka top should be raised, not punched in like yours (example below). Compare yours: 8 Quote
16k Posted January 21, 2020 Report Posted January 21, 2020 The stamps don’t look stamped but rather chiseled. I’d say Polish replica too. 1 Quote
vajo Posted January 21, 2020 Report Posted January 21, 2020 Replica. No doubt. Btw it is very good made. Quote
Stegel Posted January 21, 2020 Report Posted January 21, 2020 You guys are getting to be quite good at this! Yes it's a replica, handle casting, stampings and blade edge are the big ones. Wrong contractor for this number range also. 1 Quote
Shamsy Posted January 21, 2020 Report Posted January 21, 2020 Spot on, Bruce. One of the Polish Iijima. Quote
Navy Posted January 22, 2020 Report Posted January 22, 2020 Attempt after attempt, always better ???? In about ten years it will be hard to discerne an original vs fake. Quote
Dave R Posted January 22, 2020 Report Posted January 22, 2020 Attempt after attempt, always better In about ten years it will be hard to discerne an original vs fake. So buy one now while we can still tell the difference! 2 Quote
zook Posted January 23, 2020 Report Posted January 23, 2020 This one definitely causes a "double take" at first glance. Saya paint jumped out at me from the "distance" photos, but other issues required me to look much closer! Dave says what I often think on this matter … invest now while it is still amateur phase. 1 Quote
Shamsy Posted January 24, 2020 Report Posted January 24, 2020 Patina and things like serial ranges and small manufacturing differences will be the way to judge swords in the future. I think that unless all this is published, it'll always be possible to pick fakes. 2 Quote
Smee78 Posted January 28, 2020 Report Posted January 28, 2020 At first glance it looks real good but the devil is in the details. This is a nice example and alot better than most of the fakes. +1 for Bruce and I agree with Shamsy (Patina and things like serial ranges and small manufacturing differences will be the way to judge swords in the future).
