Justin Posted May 30, 2013 Report Posted May 30, 2013 I was just thinking that you don't see a lot of kinko tsuba for tanto. Does anyone have any nice examples they can post? I spotted a great tanto tsuba in one of the KTK books and will post a pic later. Quote
tony edmunds Posted May 30, 2013 Report Posted May 30, 2013 Hi Justin Funny you should ask that here's my Kyoto kinko (I think) Tanto tsuba in shakudo from a recent thread. Tony Quote
Jean Posted May 30, 2013 Report Posted May 30, 2013 Good news, my laptop which broke down 8 days ago has been repaired and I should get it at the end of next week. i shall then post a tanto shakudo tsuba (Mito school) you will Quote
Justin Posted May 30, 2013 Author Report Posted May 30, 2013 Very nice guys. Here is the example from the KTK catalogue that I mentioned above. Sorry about the poor photo. This tsuba belongs to fellow Australian collector, Mr Andrew Amble. I haven't seen it in the hand yet, but I look forward to one day. Quote
Curran Posted May 30, 2013 Report Posted May 30, 2013 Jean has a similar quality one, which is probably higher end Mito work or Umetada work. Quote
Lance Posted May 31, 2013 Report Posted May 31, 2013 Here's some pictures of a tanto tsuba with zodiac animals on a shibuichi base signed Yumyoken Masahiro that I posted in the past, one pic includes a dime for scale. Regards, Lance Quote
Marius Posted May 31, 2013 Report Posted May 31, 2013 Three almost identical ko-kinko tsuba: http://yakiba.com/Tsuba_Ko-Kinko_Group.htm Quote
Jean Posted May 31, 2013 Report Posted May 31, 2013 Question: Most tanto existing tsuba are hamidashi. Now what is the size of a classical tanto tsuba taking into consideration that a katana size tsuba begins at 3 inches. BTW, I have seen a lot of katana with tsuba under 3 inches Quote
Bazza Posted May 31, 2013 Report Posted May 31, 2013 BTW, I have seen a lot of katana with tsuba under 3 inches A friend of mine has a Shingunto with a tanto size hamidashi tsuba. If he sees this he will know what I mean and may comment further. BaZZa. Quote
Alex A Posted May 31, 2013 Report Posted May 31, 2013 Where small tsuba on katana popular in the late muromachi period? Alex. Quote
Soshin Posted May 31, 2013 Report Posted May 31, 2013 Hi Everyone, Here is a link to a signed Myochin Katchushi tanto tsuba I once had in my collection: http://www.japaneseswordbooksandtsuba.com/store/tsuba-%26-kodogu/t141-iron-mokume-tsuba. The iron had a wonderful texture in hand. Quote
Justin Posted May 31, 2013 Author Report Posted May 31, 2013 I believe it was fashionable to fit small tsuba to uchigatana in the Late Muromachi period. They look strange to me as the nakago-ana is large and takes up a lot of the tsuba's size. Quote
Alex A Posted May 31, 2013 Report Posted May 31, 2013 Ive seen a lot of small tsuba recently with large nakago ana, obviously fitted to a katana/tachi at one point in time. A lot of folk think its a strange look, I quite like it . Alex. Quote
MauroP Posted May 31, 2013 Report Posted May 31, 2013 Hi everybody, this tantō tsuba arrived just yesterday. Made of brass (shinchū - 真鍮), 55 x 46 mm, decorated with hare and waves (nami ni usagi zu - 波に兎図). Probably late Edo and possibly Nara style (criticism on attribution are welcomed). Bye, Mauro Quote
b.hennick Posted May 31, 2013 Report Posted May 31, 2013 Here is a link to a thread on a tanto tsuba I was trying to get information on. It too is a brass tsuba - perhaps Nara. viewtopic.php?f=2&t=15743 Quote
Alan Morton Posted June 1, 2013 Report Posted June 1, 2013 Hello Mauro, there is the exsact same tsuba in the book "Tsuba in Southern Californian Collections" I think is the book and the one in the book is signed, so will tell you who it is. My copy of the book went missing quite a few years ago. I have the exsact tsuba as you somewere. Barry's is the same theme but not the same tsuba. I will post a Photo when I find the tsuba Alan Quote
Justin Posted June 1, 2013 Author Report Posted June 1, 2013 By the way, if anyone sees a nice tanto sized kinko tsuba for sale then please let me know. I would like a good one for my collection. Quote
Chris Colman Posted June 2, 2013 Report Posted June 2, 2013 Tsuba from a tanto I owned some time ago, photos taken with one of the first digital cameras so apologies for the quality, not that the quality of my photography has improved markedly from those days. chris colman Quote
MauroP Posted June 2, 2013 Report Posted June 2, 2013 Hi Alan, thank you for the feedback. I would be pleased if you could provide me an image of a similar tsuba and any other relevant clues on it. Bye, Mauro Quote
