Nothing wrong with that sword. Nice gunto.

Is this real or fake and what is the translation.

You show only very little and ask for help. Its a wartime gunto. The kanji says Kanesada as Russ said. My best guess is a showa-to. -
Opinions and value of a type 95 nco sword

Not that screw. The tiny little screws on a Type 98 saya are hard to find -

Blade is lost -
That hikone soten shows the battle of the Uji bridge in the heike monogatari. Most are 19th century made. I like the face expression.
-
Looks like assambled from different parts.
-
What makes you think they are not practical for mounting? Thats the same like people say Tsuba with motif in the seppa dai are not practical for mounting. But it was.
-
Not burning own stuff in ignorant discussions. They are all different. No one is identical.
-
Sounds like a type3 gunto.
-
Btw in the group are some Fake swords with mixed genuine parts from different members. I think there is something going on. Replacement parts on fake swords? That sword with that tsuka and that Kissaki?
-
For me it look more fake than genuine. the stamp looks scratched not stamped. The nanako looks very low quality from the cast. The screw is thin. The fuchi had some lacquer ripples and the stamps are not really clear. The bo-hi looks false and cheap.

Gendaito are traditional forged true Japanese swords. To answer your question about quality: No! Age is never a indicator of quality. Second question: If a gendaito comes in Gunto mount it is worthy. Changing the mounts to a civillian look is like you change a 80 years old oldtimer car into a modern sand buggy. Do it not! Take a look on my site about gendaito. You can use google to translate the website. http://www.schmucker-info.net/ -
I don't like the brittle surface texture. It reminds me on old iron pans
-
Thats a cool picture to compare fake replica and real ones.
-
Hard to say from that pictures. But what i see looks like late shin shinto Tsunatoshi.
-
It looks bad but it isn't. The weak metals didn't corrode. The most is some kind of dirt. Dissamble the whole sword. Remove the wood inlays. If you had no idea about metal ask a oldtimer mechanic. He can tell you what to do. Nice sword.

It looks like a fake Japanese sword. All parts incl. blade looks fake. If the blade is real it is in such bad condition it would not make sense to let it polish.
-
sorry for this Stephen.

I meant the cloissone and patination in general. I thought it is clear that i know what menuki and fuchi & kashira are? I was smiling about Jeans post. But i think he wanted to make a joke.

No, no Jean all ok. I was surprised.

New Collector ~ NCO Sword - Serial Number
vajo replied to montrealfan1986's topic in Military Swords of Japan
A genuine one. Thats not my picture. Its from facebook to show the details, i watch out first if a nco is genuine or not. If you know where to look on you see the difference instant. It is often very hard to compare the blades on bad pictures to see the other details, like stamps, numbers and so on. If these 3 details are wrong you must not look further. The fuchi can be changed. So the stamps are not allways a clear sign if its fake or not. If someone change all parts on a replica he paid a lot of money
