  1. Kren, I would like to suggest that you approach kantei (sword appraisal) in the same order that NMB member Markus Sesko recommends in https://markussesko.com/2015/02/06/kantei-introduction/ You might notice that Markus doesn't even bring up the mei, in this article. Why? Because the vast majority of sword mei are gimei - fake! I've lost count of how many books Markus has written, but he's one of the real experts, that we all can learn from.
  2. I'm sorry, Darius, but I disagree. Had you bought a blade with any redeeming factors, I wouldn't have any argument. But there's nothing about this one that you can learn from, so I hope you re-zero your brain, & buy a quality Nihonto, next time.
  3. The more I look at it, the more cool details I see. It's too bad that the tanto isn't still with it, as I'm sure the owner made this exquisite koshirae to match its quality. Can you post a few more shots of the habaki, showing all sides? I have one late-Edo solid-gold habaki, but it's much-plainer than yours.
  4. I've also watched for, "Papered to..."

    Mokume tsuba

Both very nice. Wish more of these came up for sale.
  6. Tony, next time, please post under Translation, but I'm sure someone will help.
  7. Mike, find a small piece of ivory (broken piano key), & gently scrape at that. In between, a small amount of choji oil won't hurt, really.
  8. There were so many generations of Sukesada, why would anyone forge a fake mei?
  9. Is he a smith, or just a guy who finishes the shaping?
  10. It's not just sasashi who insert those shims. I've needed to do that three times, so far.
  11. That was a very-interesting find, Steve! (Ratio of samurai of various clan) Nanbu clan (1711) 6.9% Kubota (Akita) clan (1849) 9.8% Mutsu Nakamura clan (1681) 26.0% Tsuwano clan (1805) 7.2%
  12. I do wonder what has soured you, Rayhan. Although we've never corresponded, I remember enjoying your posts, & am sorry that has changed 180 degrees. Rather have you back in the fold, but, if not possible, then depart, quietly, without forcing Brian to take sides. Ken
  13. If you ever publish something there, Grev, you can log in any time you want, & all papers are free.
  14. I guess I'm not going through the right attics!
  15. Please go to your profile, & add your first name, so we know how to address you. Yes, Fred has done some excellent work, although you may have to send him your blade. And do let him know that you will be training with your shinken.
  16. Nice train, but I hope they made some yen before the pandemic hit.
  17. Gripping what? And I've always seen that called "cat scratch."
  18. Conspicuous overconsumption.

    Mokume tsuba

    That's really large mokume!
  20. Any more recent? Jussi?
  21. Not sure that the Japan Postal Service is the culprit, as I received a tsuba from my grandson in Fussa-shi, dated less than a week ago.
  22. Many tosho are doing utsushi, but it's a good question whether they can ever be papered. I'd bet on the answer being yes, because smiths have copied each other for a thousand years, but I wouldn't bet on when.
  23. Eckart, please add one more image of the full-length,totally-bare blade, as sugata is the first feature to look at.
  24. If I make a comment that I like a blade, tsuba, etc., it's certainly not to "push" someone's sale. It's simply because I like the item.
