Got this dirk in my collection. It looks like mid - Late war and has brown brown polished rayskin handle and a star mekugi instead of the sakura. Theres also an exampel in the book "Japanese pattern dirks" the banks collection. Has anyone seen this type before in hand or in period photos?

Its the tsuka ito maker sign, IMO. The sign on tsuka the collectors refer to ,sounds like shirasaya with sayagaki.

I will soon take some more photos of it ,but the very strong hadori makes it difficult to capture the hamon with the camera. Heres a photo of it with my other top finds from 2014. Hi Jussi, Did You see it in the auction?

The itomaki is katana.

The rust under the habaki is fingerprints when someone have takeing the blade out.

Thanks guys, I will try take some better shots. This has been a very long sword once . I have drawed the habaki where it was mounted first time. The Line over the habaki is where the handle of the ken sword ends ,there are faint marks from the engraving.

Im not good with a camera. The nagasa is 71,5 cm long and 2,8 cm wide , 0,6 cm thick ,nakago is 17 cm long, Sori 3,8 cm. Shirasaya total length 101,5 cm. The mei is difficult to read ,its very faint. I dont have any other info on this blade. But would like to hear more any opinions are welcome.

Its a very god book with lots of info. A must have for military sword collectors.Buy it ,thats a very nice price. Dawson's books dosnt have so much info , its more photos. -

Congrats with the sword. We need a photo of the nakago. There was several smiths with that name. He was smith in Gifu. The label on the saya tells that. It also once had a leather field cover on the scabbard.

An enemy on a retrete with his sword handle in down position. He looks Korean. I think Its a scabbard.

The seppas are probebly gold foil ,so its the copper the make marks on the tsuba. -
You need the book " the samurai sword" by John Yumoto, its cheap and easy to find. Its any easy intro to the Japanese sword. The other one is hard to find and expensive. Didnt se it was a auction. Just it was Aoi.
