autodex Posted July 21, 2019 Report Posted July 21, 2019 Hello I recently purchased on layaway this Tanto. Please see article and pics below. Looking for opinions and if I should be concerned about the wound on the hamon towards the tip of the blade. I believe it is in the original old polish Thanks Steve 1 Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted July 21, 2019 Report Posted July 21, 2019 I don't see anything of significant alarm near the kissaki, what exactly are you referring to? Quote
autodex Posted July 21, 2019 Author Report Posted July 21, 2019 Please see circles section discoloration Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted July 21, 2019 Report Posted July 21, 2019 Looks nothing more than rubbing on the saya to the Hadori polish. 1 Quote
autodex Posted July 21, 2019 Author Report Posted July 21, 2019 Thanks what are your impressions of the blade Quote
16k Posted July 21, 2019 Report Posted July 21, 2019 Nothing alerting to me. Keep it oiled and you should be safe. 1 Quote
paulb Posted July 21, 2019 Report Posted July 21, 2019 I agree with John, I dont think there is anything of great concern. Overall it looks to be an interesting blade and you dont see too many Showa period tanto. 2 Quote
ROKUJURO Posted July 21, 2019 Report Posted July 21, 2019 The photos are not good enough to allow a comment, at least not for me. Generally speaking, all kinds of corrosion are issues you have to deal with to prevent spreading. A blade like yours which seems to be in very good condition derives its attractiveness from a perfect appearance, so you should show the blade to someone competent to evaluate the damage (if there was one at all). 1 Quote
autodex Posted July 22, 2019 Author Report Posted July 22, 2019 Thanks, checked w seller he stated it is just discoloration from someone touching the blade and can be polished out w finger stones but is not something that needs to be immediately addressed Quote
autodex Posted July 24, 2019 Author Report Posted July 24, 2019 She is coming this week review to follow Quote
Tom Darling Posted July 24, 2019 Report Posted July 24, 2019 The discoloration (blemish) is apparent. The polisher ( togishi) may not have been able to remove it, The seller should have done, what he suggested, you can do, using finger stones that a togishi uses to polish out? Interesting statement, " not something that needs to be immediately addressed". The nakago at the habaki shows corrosion. How far up does it go? Peace. Tom D. 1 Quote
SAS Posted July 24, 2019 Report Posted July 24, 2019 If the polisher was unable to remove it without changing the shape, it is unlikely that the owner will be able to, assuming the polish was recent. Quote
autodex Posted July 24, 2019 Author Report Posted July 24, 2019 Hello I will take a pic of the blade without the habaki upon receipt. I was given another pic previously. Please see attached Quote
Stephen Posted July 24, 2019 Report Posted July 24, 2019 If you take it to finger stone you wont be happy with yourself. Lets see in your hand how bad it looks. If its realing nagging you send it to a pro. Quote
autodex Posted July 24, 2019 Author Report Posted July 24, 2019 Thanks I guess I need to make sure it’s not active rust otherwise for me it’s not an issue and I would hate to have to send the blade away for a year a two to touch up given current turn around times I have seven from certain polishers Quote
Stephen Posted July 24, 2019 Report Posted July 24, 2019 more like weeks for touch up, it would be done in a day. Quote
autodex Posted July 24, 2019 Author Report Posted July 24, 2019 Ok good to know can you recommend a polisher that could potentially do this in that timeframe? Quote
Stephen Posted July 24, 2019 Report Posted July 24, 2019 Id ask Woodrow Hall. Or known as Woody Being just a small area touch up he might do it. Note all---Woody no longer does Ww2 Gendaito. Ill PM his FB page...be sure to wait till you recive it. Quote
