Hi Ford

I am not one of your project backers. I did not joined the project when it started, unfortunately for me I was not even a NMB member at that time, and now the kikstarter site does not allow me to join it. I did not find any active link to do that on the page.

I hope it will be possible to buy the book once available though.

Hi Luca,

it will be a limited print run in the first instance but I do intend to print more than the 500 for my backers. We'll probably advertise pre-order options when we go to print. I'll post an announcement here on the NMB at that time or, to make sure not to miss out, you could sign up for news updates on my website.

If you don't have my book everything you think you know about shakudo, shibuichi and yamagane will be wrong ;-) and the rest thoroughly stirred and filtered for good measure. How's that for a sales advert?

And if you'd like to be notified when we start taking pre-orders for the book (if you missed the Kickstarter Campaign) please sign up for news updates on my website.

Thank you.

Update today:

The writing is done. Finally!

And I'm now getting everything ready for printing and doing what I must to get that and subsequent postage funded....

We've also been working of the postcards and art prints that are to be rewards etc. and will be posting images here very soon too. The first one should be with me this week......

One suggestion that was put to me recently was to make the book available to you as a downloadable pdf while the logistics of finalising the physical book are dealt with. I'm a little hesitant to make it available in that form, for obvious reasons, but I'd very much like to hear what you think.

I've got a ton of work to keep abreast with so I'll get back to that now and post more details next week.....

For me, printed please as I think the book will itself be a collector's item. Glad we are getting there.

I would love to have both.

The printed version for my library and the pdf to bring it with me while on the move...

Ford please let us know, as soon as possible, how to place an order for the book. Unfortunately I am not one of the kickstarter backers so I have to find a way to oder it now!

Ford, it is hard to control copying and distribution of PDF files once they get "out into the wild". While I can appreciate the ease of use in having PDF files to read on my tablet, for the protection of the work you are doing I would suggest limiting to printed copies.

Hello all,

and thanks for the continued support and your patience.

The response thus far has been overwhelmingly in favour of waiting for the real book and not putting a pdf out there. I really appreciate everyones concern about the protection of the material in that respect, and of course that was my biggest fear also.

We'll probably aim to publish 1000 copies so that there will be about 500 extras after my backers have had their copies.

Ford,

How will it be done? At the beginning, you thought of 7 volumes, is this the first one or shall everything be concentrated on this one?

Posted

Hello Jean

this volume deals with the metals and alloys, where they came from, how they evolved and how they fit into Japanese craft and social history.  How to make them and colour them.

If I survive this first volume I will continue with the other I had planned, but I'll be doing those on my own time.

The series would be called.

"The Technology of Japanese Art Metalwork"

This volume is actually volume 7.

"Metals, Alloys and Patination - A History and Practical Manual"

The other volumes would be as follows, these would be much much easier for me as I don't need to research anything really, this is what I teach and do everyday.

Volume 1 - The Fundamentals of correct and skilful hand tool use.

Volume 2 - Basic tool making and chisel use.

Volume 3 - Inlay work

Volume 4 - Nunome Zogan – Japanese Style Damascening.

Volume 5 -  Uchidashi – Japanese style chasing and Repoussé.

Volume 6 - Carving, texturing and specialised tool making and use.

Volume 7 - Metals and Alloys - Their finishing, preparation and colouring. (obviously this one mutated)

And Patrick, Luca, once we're at the printing stage we will launch a little website about the book where it can be pre-ordered to secure a copy.

Ultimately, enterprising individuals will make digital copies(pdf) for their own use, and then........we all know what comes next.  As I can see no effective way of preventing this, the offering of digital copies for those who want them seems the sensible way to go.  Making something unavailble only makes it more enticing.
