Brian Posted May 29, 2013 Report Posted May 29, 2013 Sean, Please rotate the pics the right way up to make it at least convenient for someone to attempt the translation. Brian Quote
Mark Posted May 29, 2013 Report Posted May 29, 2013 maker is Kinmichi (can also be read kanemichi). There are a number of generations. You can do some looking online and probably find a lot. Try and work out a little of the rest of the inscription, the date will be hard as it is in "script" but the rest you might find. You will find researching is fun and you learn a lot doing it yourself. Let us know how you do and we can fill in the rest mark Quote

Jacques Posted May 29, 2013 Report Posted May 29, 2013 Hi, Mei reads : Nihon Kaji Soshô Iga no Kami Fujiwara Kinmichi 日本鍛冶宗匠伊賀守藤原金道 Shinshinto swordsmith. Can't read the date, maybe Bunsei 文政 ? Tenpo 天保, ? Quote

Shepherd Posted May 29, 2013 Author Report Posted May 29, 2013 The owner is worried it's not worth the $2000 to get it polished, I told him not to worry. :D Any Idea on what it's value is? I think he's wanting to get it polished and insured. Sean Shepherd Quote
Curran Posted May 29, 2013 Report Posted May 29, 2013 Please show the kissaki (tip) of blade, before we can comment. If kissaki is broken, it requires geometry shift of polish- which may increase expense. Others must comment on veracity of the signature. I have most koto references- very few shinshinto references. Brian Posted May 29, 2013 Report Posted May 29, 2013 I don't see enough reason to spend money on a polish. Looks in good enough polish to appreciate and paper if desired. Brian Quote

k morita Posted May 30, 2013 Report Posted May 30, 2013 Hi, The ura-mei says "雷除,以南蛮鉄造之, 天明三歳八月日". KAMINARI-YOKE, Made from Nanban-tetsu,August 1783. In those days,Twoo kanji KAMINARIYOKE should be carved as 除雷. Quote

watsonmil Posted May 30, 2013 Report Posted May 30, 2013 Dear Curran & Sean, Are my eyes deceiving me ? It would appear the hamon runs straight off the kissaki which would be a fatal flaw. This would indicate that at some point in time the kissaki has been broken and re-shaped. ... Ron Watson ADDED after Jean and Stephen's post, ... Looking once again, ... I think they are right, ... and be thankful I'm wrong ! Quote
Stephen Posted May 30, 2013 Report Posted May 30, 2013 agree with Jean, room reflection as you can see another line above it. Quote

pcfarrar Posted May 31, 2013 Report Posted May 31, 2013 In those days,Twoo kanji KAMINARIYOKE should be carved as 除雷. Does this mean it is likely gimei? It seems odd that the kanji are the wrong way around. Quote
christianmalterre Posted June 2, 2013 Report Posted June 2, 2013 don´t know Peter- He´s known to have ben worked in Mino,Yamato and Soshu style, and in ha-agari-kurijiri.
