  1. Yup - agreed fully. It was used by Hagihara san sensei at a lecture for visiting members of the NBTHK US & EU branches to coincide with the DTI a few years ago. It's basically Juyo level. Hopefully I will get to go one of these years...
  2. https://www.touken.or.jp/english/aboutus.html NBTHK site current. Click, 'Shinsa Fee List'.
  3. Michael - which tsuba are you referring to, the Torigoye or the one at the beginning of the thread?

Stephen - on YJ the seller can set up their account so that they can deny a bid so if they shill bid one too far they can delete it and the previous bid wins. Nice system, right? PS: I wish you well on Veterans Day.

  6. Sekijoken Taizan Motozane - Haynes 06004.0 - Wakayama III pgs 56 - 57, Shinsen Kinko Meikan pg. 217 & 444. Scan is from SKM: Pics: Not cast, has been mounted, has some 'gunk' for lack of a better word and is most likely 'gimei'.
  7. Thanks much James. I hope you had a great time! I'm sure there's a reason in this somewhere which will come out along the line. Pete
  8. Geraint - I have both volumes and the tsuba above isn't even close in quality to the one pictured in Torigoye, 'Tsuba Kanshoki' (Japanese language edition, 1964 - not the later English language version): The one pictured in HKT is not the same one as that from Tsuba Kanshoki but is extremely similar. There is also an example in the Nishigaki book by Ito san sensei, #167 which is similar in design but of different shape.

  10. So, Richard -- do you still have, 'the box'???
  11. From it's e-sword Japan listing (no longer listed). Length, 8.67cm. They feel it's Nagahisa. The skybirthday listing didn't provide much else aside from the plant description.
  12. FWIW - it's is considered a 'serious' breach of etiquette to speak over a blade at any time and if you do it at a kantei meeting you may very well be asked to put the sword down and leave the room. It is good to remember that to the Japanese (and others) there is a spiritual component to the blade and you are basically spitting on the spirit. Best to never do it then you won't do it by mistake, even when wearing a mask where it is expected for you to turn your head away from the blade anyway.
  13. This is the theme written on the origami above the attribution: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kai-awase @19:33 explains the game: https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/ondemand/video/2029125/
  14. https://www.zentosho.com/shuttensha/ This page has tabs to see some of the catalog items. Needless to say they are incredible. This is my favorite: Now then, how to win the lottery...
  15. Hi Paul - long time. I had no luck last year and this year there is (as usual) a listing on Tokugawa Art which states there will be a headin translation: http://www.sanmei.com/contents/en-us/d1.html So far nothing found on the zentosho site. I can't find anything anywhere but it is still eleven days away so I'll keep my fingers crossed and will post if I find something. Take care, Pete
  16. Shakudo is patinated as are most of the alloy finishes. The alloy components and pickling solutions are changed/titered to create the different shades. This will help: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shakudō https://www.jimkelso.com/japanpatina.html/tutorial.htm
  17. Just received this: Dear NBTHK/AB member, It is with great sadness that I must report the passing of our fellow member, long time collector, and friend, Arnold Frenzel. Further information will be transmitted to the membership of the NBTHK American Branch as soon as it is received. Most Sincerely, Richard Mantegani Treasurer, NBTHK/AB ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Arnold was a great guy who I will miss greatly. My sincerest condolences to his family and friends.
  18. Bill Miller in Atlanta would know. I do not have his contact info.
  19. Brian - the tagane on the seppa can sometimes be seen on Tosa Myochin tsuba. They did many tsuba in the Akasaka style. If not TM I'd say Akasaka.
