  1. Here's a big gun show. 4,200 tables. 11 acres. The trick is to convert all those gun collectors into sword collectors.
  2. Barry, There are more than a few, including myself, that would love to have your luck! BTW, thanks for posting the link.
  3. I vaguely remember shows in Austin, too; or am I mistaken?
  4. Once had a wakizashi that I'd owned for a couple of years before discovering it had hagire. Probably never would have found it had it not been for the all the factors (light intensity, color, viewing angle, etc.) coming together at one time. And whenever I could find it, if I looked away and then looked back, it was like starting over to find it again.
  5. It would be interesting to compare stats between the DTI and SFTK shows. Are there a greater percentage of young people at the DTI? Are there more international? Do a greater percentage of swords trade hands?
  6. Thought it would be easy, but I can't figure the third character out. Thanks in advance!
  7. One very similar was offered on samuarisword.com some time ago. http://www.samuraisword.com/nihonto/shinsakuto/Ono_Yoshimitsu_70cm/index.htm
  8. I like it. Weird that they mention the extreme thickness twice, but unless I'm overlooking it, don't give the kasane dimension. Edit: I need to "see" an eye doctor. moto-kasane 1,17cm.
  9. Can't answer your question, but it is discussed a little bit here.
  10. Bruce, I'm no good at puzzles, much less Japanese; but if the character is 伊, I found that it's the first character of 伊勢神宮 Grand Shrine at Ise. On the other hand, if it's some form of 海, it could mean navy.
  11. Thanks, Jan. The few Japanese firearms I've handled have been late Arisaka types, and none with wood as nice as these.
  12. Wow! I know nothing about Japanese firearms. What type of wood(s) were used? Great seeing the photos.
  13. That's what you call a pickin' picker.
  14. Gary, Hurry up and get to the good stuff. Seriously, I'm in awe.
  15. This one on R. Stein's site may be contributing to the confusion.
  16. Thanks Piers. I was thinking that last character might have been "eye" (as in bore size).
  17. I'm guessing the first two kanji are 三 (3, or possibly 五,5) followed by 十 (10). No clue on the last one.
  18. Just FYI... https://www.ebay.com/itm/273692378375?ul_noapp=true
  19. Ha! Reminds me of that other thread.... The sword has some nice points. Could the area from the yokote to the tip be repolished? If I were going to roll the dice, I might go that route instead of shinsa. Definitely take it to the show and get some opinions. Actually, if it were mine, I think I would be happy with it as-is, or take it to the show and trade for something else.
  20. After that, it's easy as 1, 2, 3.
  21. Help translating papers. https://www.japaneseswordindex.com/origami.htm http://www.nihontocraft.com/japanese_sword_papers.html http://new.uniquejapan.com/nthk-npo-nihon-token-hozon-kai-certification-paper-ranking-for-Japanese-swords/ http://new.uniquejapan.com/nbthk-nihon-bijutsu-token-hozon-kyokai-certification-paper-ranking/
  22. You can count on Makita to secure your valuables in a hurry.
