Now that i could understand. Names are often not that cut and dry, especially if some head-monk inspected and named it. In those cases i feel its more about the feeling a bowl gives (and in some cases a way for a monastery and/or shrine to create some extra income). But on topic, sure its understandable that a seller would list something, but in this case I would be interested to see if the auction is updated and corrected after communicating said correction. Then again, generally it comes down to buyers beware. Also now that i think about it, it wasn't long ago that i caught the Mashiko bug. I'm fortunate to own 2 pieces by Takeichi Kawai, a nephew of Kanjiro Kawai who like Shoji Hamada initiated the movement. But before having those chawan in my hands i wasn't enticed by Mashiko ware at all; but now i admit they have a certain charm. If you don't mind i can add pictures of the 2 bowls.

It looks more like someone placed his initials between two X's to me (X V N X).

Depending on the seller, i would contact him or her and try to return it.. Unless you're happy and like it, but still not very honest.

Fwiw to me it doesn't appear to be something done by the smith.

Thanks for that follow up video. Lovely vase! I personally love the shapes most typical of shino. Rough yet refined, an almost thrown on glaze yet its defined in motives such as the grass. Thank you once again

After going through that whole discussion starting page 1, now i'm just dying to know what is going on. Assuming i read all correctly, OP shared sword, but after guarantee from Aoi, didn't pass at all? Seems weird, thought it was a nice blade. I'll be waiting for an update..

Depending on the app/program you're using, image processors often have a tool for this. Mostly found under >tools >resize/ adjust size.

I found myself coming back to this one for multiple listening sessions so to speak, and wow. I just moved to a new house, got everything in there, organized - near ideal. Laying on the couch listening to this and totally mellowing out.

Well that depends, for me personally. In this case i would be hesitant not to think this hi was added when it was last shortened, and if so then i would see it just like any other blade, its better to have it as is than not to have it, better to have it altered than to have it been scrapped..

I suppose that is why generally the whole sword is presented, then it seems to become more like a sort of checklisting to see what fits, starting with the shape and grain. Here it seems the hada & boshi are the biggest clues..

Yes Paul, its only now that I've been starting to comprehend the ways i can use several books (indexes, some found here are really invaluable for this). With some personal page markers i'm becoming much more handy finding what i'm looking for. This is what makes this hobby so much more interesting, and the personal satisfaction as you mentioned, that's really what will keep me doing these kinds of kantei. Especially fun when everyone chimes in and indeed, so great to learn from. Edit: i suppose this is also why you should buy books first (i wasn't that well read on nihonto to actually listen to it but i totally see the point now haha).

After being pointed in the right direction *(Raymond), i have been looking through some of my books and from this photo and the reference material alone i was thinking between ko and chu aoe. On ko-aoe its said that bohi and carvings are rare, but who knows. I'm not nearly knowledgeable enough to do kantei but its very enjoyable to have the references to be able to research it.

Like you said it might very well not be made in Japan. It doesn't really scream any particular style to me as far as origin goes. Could be from Thailand.

Thank you John. I'm assuming you meant 翁 (sorry I'm not familiar with a lot of kanji). It was in one of the titles of a sold listing. So would it be correct as such? 幕 baku 府 fu Or are they perhaps only interpreted as such when together? Kind regards,

Hi everyone, I'm always on the lookout for reference material by Kawai Hisayuki and i'm having some troubles with some different ways the kanji's are inscribed. I know he signed with Fujiwara from ±68 years old to ±75, and from ±72 years to his death he starts to sign with Bakufushi Kawai. I'm at times lost when it comes to differentiating between certain kanji used. I have signatures with 翁藤原 for Fujiwara 翁 fuji 藤 wara (im not entirely sure how the split between these kanji is...) 原 Going through the kanji helper at jssus, i come up with 藤原 for Fujiwara. 藤 fuji 原 wara And this one matches the photo below, But another signed wakizashi has the following kanji which look totally different, maybe its cursive or a different style? For Bakufushi Kawai i sometimes see 藤原久幸 but i didn't find it on the kanji pages, and I'm oblivious the stroke count of this first kanji.. 藤 baku(fu?) 原 (fu?)shi (here too i'm not entirely sure how the split between these kanji is...) 幕 府 And on the nakago the first kanji is really recognizable yet there is a difference in the bottom part of which i'm also not sure. I'm hoping one of you gentle ladies or gentleman could help me clarify the difference between these kanji! Thank you in advance, Edit- apologies, i made a typo in the title.
