  1. Maybe they meant the polisher stinks.
  2. Iron is malleable also.
  3. I seem to remember some discussion here in the not too distant past regarding swords made in Indonesia during the occupation period that were for local officials under Japanese rule, made basically in homage to the nihonto shape and style but executed in a different manner. This could be one of those. EDIT TO ADD: via PM I was asked to take a second look at this....the age of the fittings, leather etc makes me think it was newly made when the grandfather "found" it in the 70s. I don't think it is a WW2 artifact.
  4. Those are really cool to look at; may I enquire in what context these objects are appreciated in Japan?
  5. Sssshhhhhhh.....no shishi tales.....top secret ya know...
  6. Having done a somewhat modified version of a blacksmith apprenticeship under a master smith, I can say that it takes a number of years before an apprentice can produce full value for the master; prior to that, it is costing the master to train the apprentice, both directly and in terms of lost production while providing instruction. It seems likely to me that the same would be true for Japanese swordsmiths.
  7. I nominate Stephen.
  8. The first sword offered to me for sale was a gimei Shinkai; I spent hours in the library trying to translate the signature (this was before i had begun collecting books) and ultimately concluded the sword was gimei and did not buy it. I think it has been said that there are more gimei Inoue Shinkai than real ones.
  9. If a man chooses to leave this life on his own terms, who are we to second guess his choice? As difficult to understand as it may be, he must have had his reasons to take such a committed action. Condolences to the family and friends.
  10. Untrained amateur attempts at metal refinishing are extremely frowned upon and have caused much damage to swords in the past. Luis, you have very strong opinions, but i kindly suggest you rethink your advice.
  11. Sorry to hear about his passing, i did not know him, but his name was in the "respected" category. My condolences. eta: $20 paypal to you Stephen for wreath. Thanks.

    Activities Question

Hagire most unfortunate; still, there is a lot to be learned from that sword.
  13. To me, it gives the impression of a mid to late Edo period mumei wakizashi styled like a naginata naoshi, shobu zukuri, ubu. I can't say much more, other than it appears authentic
  14. "Cat Walk" lol! Mr. Y looks good on TV.
  15. http://www.discovernikkei.org/en/journal/2011/02/14/issei-pioneers/ Sounds like a swordsmith, didn't want to reveal his heat treatment secrets!
  16. Interesting tsuba, is that one piece or two?
  17. Nakago ana is entirely in the wrong place.
  18. Thanks, primarily interested in finding out more on the grandfather, Teiji Kamimura.
  19. One of the latest Forged In Fire winners was Neil Kamimura; his grandfather had a blacksmith shop in Hilo, Hawaii from 1930 onwards. He was a swordsmith in Japan before immigrating, according to my mentor, who knows Neil. Does anyone have any information on him and perhaps photos of his mei/work?
  20. Next time , maybe try a hair dryer set on low and gently warm the saya.
  21. Had a great meeting yesterday visiting with Ken and his gang, discussing mumeI swords and looking at swords the members brought. THank you to Ken and the members for your warm welcome!
  22. That looks like a big project; are you doing armor?!

    What Is This?

It is not Japanese, but not necessarily a fake.....other countries have versions of swords that resemble katana, yet are not. Both China and Korea historically have similar swords.
  24. Spider rust and ware in the jigane in my opinion.
