Chango Posted June 21, 2018 Report Posted June 21, 2018 https://www.ebay.com/itm/Japanese-Samurai-Sword-Magoroku-Kanemoto-w-NBTHK-Hozon/253687275045?hash=item3b10f09e25:g:3AgAAOSwn8pa-f2a What are the chances this one is real? Mei and origami looks right at a glance... Quote
John A Stuart Posted June 21, 2018 Report Posted June 21, 2018 I can't get a clear enough picture to say anything for sure, or even which generation of 孫六 John Quote
Ray Singer Posted June 22, 2018 Report Posted June 22, 2018 Considering as it has NBTHK Hozon kanteisho, I would say the chances of it being authentic are very high (approaching 100%). 2 Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted June 22, 2018 Report Posted June 22, 2018 Later I bet, Kanemoto II had a very relaxed and subtle Sanbonsugi. Quote
Chango Posted June 22, 2018 Author Report Posted June 22, 2018 Comparing the origami to a couple of Nidai Kanemoto samples on AOI a bit closer and it looks kosher... seller posted a link to better pics too, btw. Can't imagine it doesn't have high reserve price or that a seller who knows what he's got would let it go for the stupid-low current bid... Quote
Jussi Ekholm Posted June 22, 2018 Report Posted June 22, 2018 I've always thought (maybe incorrectly) that if NBTHK specify Magoroku (孫六) in brackets then they are meaning the Magoroku, and later Kanemoto generations get sometimes kodai (後代) etc. in brackets. But it is probably most common for just Kanemoto without specification in brackets. So that is why extra added Magoroku is "significant". 2 Quote
Gakusee Posted June 22, 2018 Report Posted June 22, 2018 To add to what Jussi is saying... the first couple of Kanemotos had a nascent, not fully formed sanbosugi- some of them actually a hint of sanbosugi. From 3rd onwards the sanbosugi was very structured. From the only one decent shot here it looks like a very early Kanemoto generation and it could be indeed the Magoroku (nidai Kanemoto, shodai Magoroku). Quote
John A Stuart Posted June 22, 2018 Report Posted June 22, 2018 The mei certainly is very promising and aligns with extent examples. The price at this point is confusing. The hamon is obscured in the large photo on attachment. Worth checking closely. John Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted June 23, 2018 Report Posted June 23, 2018 Yeah, I'm seeing yakidashi on the certificate...or is that hadori? Quote
Brian Posted June 23, 2018 Report Posted June 23, 2018 Does the certificate say katana or wakizashi. At (claimed) 60.2cm it is technically a wakizashi. Big difference in value. Quote
Pete Klein Posted June 23, 2018 Report Posted June 23, 2018 So - I won this auction and paid for it. Within an hour the seller refunds my money under the heading 'it's out of stock or damaged'. Yeah, sure. Whatever. 1 Quote
Brian Posted June 23, 2018 Report Posted June 23, 2018 That was a very decent end price for a papered waki by THE Kanemoto. Can you get a real name for him Pete? That sort of unethical behavior deserves some fame. Quote
Pete Klein Posted June 23, 2018 Report Posted June 23, 2018 Brian -- Nah - it's all good. I'll find a nice set of menuki instead and be happier! 1 Quote
Chango Posted June 23, 2018 Author Report Posted June 23, 2018 I didn't bid, something seemed fishy about the whole thing (if it's too good to be true and all that). Guess my gut was right. Ebay is a damn minefield. Quote
peter k Posted June 23, 2018 Report Posted June 23, 2018 So - I won this auction and paid for it. Within an hour the seller refunds my money under the heading 'it's out of stock or damaged'. Yeah, sure. Whatever. you should've checked his feedback ratings... Quote
hxv Posted June 23, 2018 Report Posted June 23, 2018 On ebay, some days, you are the bird. Some days, you are the statue. But, much more often than not, you are the the statue... Hoanh 1 Quote
Pete Klein Posted June 23, 2018 Report Posted June 23, 2018 "you should've checked his feedback ratings..." Trust me, I did. The most recent feedback as of today was from the TBH blade / cutting test which apparently met the same fate. Quelle dommage! Like I care. He can have them for breakfast. Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted June 23, 2018 Report Posted June 23, 2018 Another seller to avoid, I had bid on this as well. Quote
Prewar70 Posted June 24, 2018 Report Posted June 24, 2018 Sounds like the same thing Eric Wazamano does on eBay. This seller is in NY as well, wouldn't be surprised if they are one in the same. Quote
Chard16 Posted June 26, 2018 Report Posted June 26, 2018 So - I won this auction and paid for it. Within an hour the seller refunds my money under the heading 'it's out of stock or damaged'. Yeah, sure. Whatever. I bought to the same seller the sword kanesada with cutting test. I won and paid and then he refund me saying the item is out of stock.no reply from the seller. Sigh Quote
Brian Posted June 26, 2018 Report Posted June 26, 2018 Really wish you would both report him to eBay.It's one thing to get over it and not let it bother you. But for the sake of others out there, who may go to extreme measures to raise the funds to pay him, and then have it cancelled...I think he should be nailed for this. 1 Quote
