    Many years ago in the JSSUS Newsletter, Ron Hartmann write a very good article on boshi. Years later I used it as part of a presentation on boshi. I ended by describing how to draw an oshigata of boshi. I supplied paper and equipment to the members. Ron's original article inspired me to draw oshigata off my Sweeties. It is amazing how much you can learn by doing that. I suggest that you try it. If you do not have the proper Japanese "crayon" I suggest that try a black "grease pencil".

    Over the years I have had hidden blades in the following fan, pipe case, jitte and cane. The cane house a good blade. The others pretty poor blades. I think that the jitte was modern but made to look older.

    Their story ended about 1702. I would expect their swords not to reflect blades of the 18th or later. They had 100 years of Shinto swords to choose from but seem not to favour Hizento.

    I have been recommending this book for years. It is published by the Lulu in both paperback and hard cover.

    I buy Bob Benson's uchiko - huge - $45 - lasts for a very very long time. Excellent quality.

    I put some foam on and use the tooth brush to remove dirt. I pat the tsuka dry with paper towel. I do not rinse or put the tsuka in water.

    I use foaming soap from a spray bottle that is made for kids. It is very gentle. I also use a clean, well-used tooth brush that is soft and has never caused any damage. The foam soap works well on tsuka aito (handle wrap).

    Thanks for the speedy replies. I have not seen the blade, You know what they say for every 10 Kotetsu 11 are fake.

    John: It takes a lot of study of good swords in-hand to get to that level of confidence. Viewing blades on-line will not in my humble opinion get you to where you need to be to make that purchase. I still consult my mentors before making an expensive decision.

    I collect iron menuki. I was really tempted by the Natsuo set that Darcy had for sale a while ago.

    I have a NBTHK papered Hayama Enshin signed ichi.

    A few years ago, at a sword show a seller had two Enjyu blades. One had hozon papers, the other tokubetsu hozon. The one with hozon was the far better sword. That is the one I bought. I judged the swords and bought the better one - no regrets.
