  1. Chris san, Thank you for pics of rare swords. I saw the Katsunobu sword for the first time. Nice bright Jigane!! To be sure, their name does not appear on Meikan. As you know their name listed on [Name list of 1st Gunto Exhibition] in 1943.
  2. I bought an old book from the secondhand book shop today, in order to interpret five characters on [ 詩経,The Classic of Poetry]. The book explains [ 詩経,The Classic of Poetry] in detail.
  3. Aizu-ju Tōshirō Masanaga
  4. Jan, (1) These five characters are a phrases from [ 詩経,The Classic of Poetry] of China. Not Confucius. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classic_of_Poetry (2) Although each kanji character on the barrel is beautiful, these five characters are not written with one style of brushwriting. Some manner of brushwriting is mixed. like Fig1.

  6. Hi Jan, Probably, nobody (not Moriyama-san) was able to read the silver Kanji of the barrel until now. Please understand that there are very few persons who can read this difficult the silver Kanji even in Japan. Don't worry ,I can read it. :D The meaning is: Don't grieve your parents. / Don't let parents feel shameful.

  11. Hi, The inlay on a barrel is Waka-poem. 秋の野の(に)錦のことも、見ゆるかな色なき露は、そめじと思ふに。 (This Waka-poem is composing the wonderful scene of the hills and fields in autumn.) Named "Akinishiki or Shukin" 秋錦(splendor of autumn),the silver inlay is a nickname of this gun in connection with the theme of this Waka-poem.

  17. Hi, John san, Your sword inscription is old owner's inscription(kiritsuke-mei). 吉備 (Kibi) is a family name. 真金 (Sane-kane) is 1st name, not "shin-gane". 為 (to-nasu)--- for. 佩 (hai)--- wearing(the sword) . Meaning is "Wearing this sword for Kibi Sanekane".
  18. In this case ,真 金(shin-gane) means core steel, not iron. See Slough's book on page 98.
