DTM72 Posted November 9, 2020 Report Posted November 9, 2020 Is it possible to add a Kozuka or Kogai slot to an existing saya? If so, who in the US is capable of performing such a task. Cheers! Quote
Stephen Posted November 9, 2020 Report Posted November 9, 2020 Id go with John T https://www.facebook.com/johntiradosayashi/ Quote
b.hennick Posted November 9, 2020 Report Posted November 9, 2020 I think that it would be easier to create a new saya. 1 Quote
DTM72 Posted November 9, 2020 Author Report Posted November 9, 2020 I guess I really don't know how they are originally made. Are the pockets carved from the inside of the saya, then a thin piece is added to the inside to separate the kogatana from touching the blade of the sword? Is it all carved from the outside, then a piece is added with heavy lacquer to cover the split lines...IDK. I have seen many videos on saya and shira-saya making, but I have never viewed a video that included the addition of accessory slots. Quote
ROKUJURO Posted November 9, 2020 Report Posted November 9, 2020 Dan, you will have to open the SAYA completely, which will require new lacquer work. 1 Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted November 9, 2020 Report Posted November 9, 2020 Inletting the slots on a lacquered Saya sounds like a recipe for disaster. Best to have a new Saya made than destroying an original. 2 1 Quote
John A Stuart Posted November 10, 2020 Report Posted November 10, 2020 John is absolutely correct, as is Barry. You can't repaint the Sistine Chapel. John 2 Quote
Grey Doffin Posted November 10, 2020 Report Posted November 10, 2020 The pocket is made by cutting/planing a flat on the side of the saya and then gluing on a piece of wood with a recess cut into it that forms the sides and outside of the pocket (the inside surface of the pocket is the flat on the saya). I think I have this right. Grey 1 Quote
Dave R Posted November 10, 2020 Report Posted November 10, 2020 If you hunt this site you will find a thread about having new mounts made, with progress pics. Otherwise I suggest buying a knackered saya and taking it apart as research, and post pics here. 1 Quote
