  1. These carbon based life forms 'infest' V'ger, interferring with it's intended functions and therefore must be neutralized...
  2. Danny is a very good guy and is good to do business with.
  3. NBTHK 'Papers' are only issued to 'deceased' makers, not living. I believe the other organizations follow suit, but their members would be better to advise than I. Yoshindo Yoshihara is still living, although I have heard other opinions on the matter...
  4. I wish there was one authoritative text on kantei points for ALL schools and makers. Of course, it doesn't exist in Japanese either. That aside, I wish all of the major texts in Japanese were available in English translation. It would be interesting to see how their thoughts have changed over the years and how they differ from what have become 'ours' due to the limited nature of texts available to us in English or other languages.
  5. "A fine Juyo set of ko-kinko sword fittings (futatokoromo), Muromachi period (15th/16th century)" Considering the gun did not come to Japan until 1543 I believe 'Late Muromachi / Momoyama' would be a better descriptive.
  6. Agree with all. A very good and sincere man who loved books and everything about them. A man who will be missed, especially by those of kindred spirit.
  7. Thank you Brian. That is EXACTLY where I was going.
  8. I believe it is very important for we all to emulate ISIS in the destruction of antiquities...
  9. OMG! Someone aside from me actually owns a kogai !?! LOL
  10. I have the working copy of Henri Joli's 'Shosankenshu' in which he attributes this as 'Yasunaga' and in ink annotates it to (Nukagawa) Yasuyoshi => Haynes 11353. Note that the mei kanji for Toshi is different than in the actual mei. Also, they use the 'Nukagawa' in parentheses: 天長斎(額川)保寿. The Nukagawa School is seen in Sesko's 'Japanese Toso-Kinko Schools'page 315. Hope this helps more than confuses.
  11. It's known as, 'Ballpeenchime'...
  12. Unsigned, papered kogai: http://www.token-net.com/juyotoken/juyo_kodogu0711juyo-komino-1.html All is relative.
  13. There is a shinsa (professional judging organization) at the show also so you could actually have it judged (for a fee) and if the signature is good get a paper for it. If you are thinking of selling it there will be dealers and collectors there who purchase swords. Here is a link to the thread on all of this: http://www.militaria.co.za/nmb/topic/16320-chicago-sword-show-424-26-2015-midwest-token-kai/?do=findComment&comment=172284
  14. I would go NHK World http://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/ or to www.youtube.com and watch episodes of Core Kyoto, Begin Japanology, Seasoning the Seasons, and any other programs you run across as they are a great way to learn in English (other languages too) about the culture of Japan. I've learned so much from them and often see something that reminds me of a fittings theme or a place in Japan which relates to sword culture. It's a good start. PS: 'Japan Spirit and Form' is a good series you can find on Youtube.

    Wooden Tsuba

    And... there it is.

    Wooden Tsuba

Seems to be a bit of a knotty problem... Jean -- I have heard of them but rarely found and I would think they would be a bit impracticable . The chance of breakage would be too great. Guido would know more on this.
  17. Possibly Masaaki? He's the only one other than Masatsune who had 'Masa' in his mei, at least that I can find.
  18. I don't believe this has been re-patinated. It's just that the patina has oxidized which gives it a dull appearance. I've seen these before with that look and it's probably just an anomaly of that finish.
  19. Tsuba old, sekigane new.
  20. 'Repo' is short for repossess, as used in the movie title, 'Repo Man'. 'Repro' is short for reproduction, as used to describe any movie based upon a comic book... (lol)
  21. Well, the fact that the signatures aren't even close but as for a 'kantei point' I'd say because the work isn't even close to Ishiguro craftsmanship. Once you've seen the real deal in hand it's night and day.
  22. Here is a scan from the 'Shinsen Kinko Meikan': I would say gimei.
  23. I would agree. What I am finding most interesting is that the rust on the seppadai is similar to that of the rest of the tsuba. If it was stored on the koshirae there would more likely be a border of differentiation. Perhaps it was stored off the koshirae and rusted there? The omote sekigane is also 'clean' while that of the ura has patina. Where's Cumberbatch when you need him??? LOL!
  24. Looks like it had severe rust damage and was dropped which caused the mimi to separate. If you look at the kozuka ana area you can see it has been compressed and deformed.
