  1. Hi Graham, it's very difficult, if not impossible, to assess an age to these adornments (maedate, ushirodate, sashimono.....etc) based on pictures of this quality. However, I agree with you about the Wakisaka armor. Beseides the "1,5" Wakisaka gusoku in my posession, I can roughly trace the numbers you mentioned. Beyond that I would like to hold back with further comments in public. Not because there is nothing to say, but because the sale is still pending....
  2. The “price tags” on many of the armors and armor related items are...let me say…”quite optimistic”. Yes Jon, some nice pieces amongst the lots, but as usual, buyer beware!!!
  3. Hi Andrew, if you now not totally discouraged by the above statements, then try Hawley/Chappelear “Mon, The Japanese family crest” (a quite useful standard work)! There are others available on the western market, but you have to start somewhere. The big Japanese books are mostly expensive and hard to navigate for a non native speaker….
  4. Yes Ed, it reads “近藤光保” (Kondō Mitsuyasu)!

    Hanpo alteration

You can fit a not matching tare with a technique called “kōmori-tsuke”!
  6. “八幡大菩薩” (Hachiman Daibosatsu). Interesting blade, indeed!
  7. Ok, next step. Top left most likely “謹祝献上刀”… Off for work!
  8. To start with something… ”沼田直宗” (Numata Naomune), I assume!
  9. Close to “佐州住利貞” (Sashū jū Toshisada), I think!
  10. Right column in the first pic seems to end with “紋”. So it can point to a name or a mon?! Just guessing….
  11. Something for your neck again, Piers
  12. Wrong approach…sry. Please delete!
  13. Close miss, Mark 😉 I can imagine “源正甫造” (Minamoto Masasuke tsukuru)….🤔, probably the Tosa guy around Tenpō (1830-1844)!
  14. Hi Krystian, I have to agree with John and Piers….well done! The angle of your pictures don’t allow to judge if the shikoro is original. Anyway, a good match. Would be interesting to see how the wakidate are attached to the hachi 🤔 Oh, and of course, welcome to the “dark side”!
  15. Sorry for not mentioning the name in romaji, Rob. It was due to the fact that I was in doubt of “祐” (suke) and couldn’t find a smith named Sukekazu who fits the timespan…
  16. Piers…😅 I turned my ipad (😉) and got “加藤?一”, with a fair chance of “祐” for the third. But I’m not sure and couldn’t find a reference piece in a rush.
  17. Yes Tony, northern court nengo, 1371….
  18. I can see why you think “Buke”, Piers, but it makes little sense….or perhaps?!
  19. Guess the rest is simply “ニ月” (February)?!
  20. Although “祥” alone can also be read as Aki or Naga for example, in combination with “正” however, I come always up with Yoshimasa or Shousei. Not listed in Koop/Inada, by the way…..
  21. Very suspicious, indeed! Last three kanji can be read “於大連” (oite Dairen = in China)
  22. Hi George, not sure about the third, but it seems “角屋政光”…. So it could be Masamitsu. Several readings for the first two, like Kakuya, Kadoya, Sumiya, Tsunoya and Yadoya. Still searching…
  23. It is strange! Although I never met or talked to him it feels like a good friend has left the scene. A gap will remain…. My deepest condolences. RIP Darcy!
  24. Looks very “廣光” to me!
  25. No luck so far Marc…
