  1. Nice blade, nice koshirae, price is honest imho
  2. Not to hijack the thread, but after this post, yesterday, I went on eBay to give a look at NCO swords as I plan, in the future, to purchase one. Gotta say I was extremely surprised at the very high prices they go for. Same as gendaito when only machine made. How do you guys understand this?

    Katana help

I was waiting for more knowledgeable people than me to draw conclusions, but I agree with Jean. The length could point towards uchigatana at 61 cm ubu. However, most Muromachi pieces uchigatana I’ve seen tend to be a little straighter with very little tapering. So I was leaning more towards early Shinto, but pre-Kanbun of course, Mino den.

Actually, that was also my first thought when I saw the oval spaced shapes near the kissaki, but I wasn’t so sure when I saw the complete Hamon. Though I’m still leaning towards Mino den too.

Yes, Mark, I saw the Z too, but I was talking about the lower right side portion of the nakago. It looks like steel that’s been compacted to erase a mei. Then again, it could only be pitting due to rust. Also, do you have a picture of the whole sugata? It would help dating the blade. According to your measure, there seems to be a big difference between motohaba and sakihaba. Is it torii sori or koshi sori? Cheers, JP

    Katana help

Hey, Mark, is it my eyes or do I see the remnants of a signature that was removed?
  7. Yep, 100% Chinese. The good news is it’s full tang, so not a rat tail wall hanger.
  8. Speaking of books, and not flattering for Japan, The Rape of Nanking is something to read. It is controversial and truth is probably somewhere in the middle, but those events are frightening and show the darkest side of human nature during war.
  9. Very suspicious Saya. I too believe.it comes from a Chinese repro ( looks like those Saya made in the 80/90s)
  10. I loved it. I had shivers just watching the complexity of his work coupled with the simplicity of his words.
  11. Maybe that blade suffered from anorexia? :lol
  12. Hey, Brian, what you’re doing for us deserves that at least. I’m not the richest guy, even less since I frequent this board , but we need to do our share too!
  13. what you have seems to be a nagamaki naoshi. The style of the blade looks Seki to me (word of caution: I’m not an expert but with the word naoshi and the Hamon, I shouldn’t be straying too far). For the age, maybe a picture of the tang and the actual signature would help.
  14. My payment is already scheduled. I read Brian’s post yesterday and will make a donation. Just waiting for payday that should come in a few days! Great initiative, Chris!
  15. Don’t forget breathing!
  16. Never tried it but how about Renaissance Wax. I’ve heard they use it in museums.

    Stunning

    I want that for Christmas!
  18. What sort of comments are you expecting? I think it’s real.
  19. Nice setup. I wish I had the room to steal your idea
  20. Shape looks Kanbun Shinto, which would fit with the above dates.
  21. Looks like a non traditional blade to me. I personally wouldn’t spend too much for it. If your friend wants one, I’d sell this one and use the money to save and get a better one. Just my two cent.
  22. Beautiful and reasonably priced!
  23. It’s a difficult choice. I don’t have that kind of money and probably will never have. I dream of getting an Ichimonji one day, so that would be my obvious choice. That said, the Hada on the Sa looks sublime, so it would be between those two, knowing that my heart would probably fall for the Ichimonji in the end.
  24. Wow! That was impressive! I have to try that one day!
