    I wrote nengo and autocorrect changed it to mentioned. I corrected that but it seems as if autocorrect struck again. I hate autocorrect.

    I miss Jim. He would teach me something about "old swords" at every San Francisco sword show. He introduced me to a man who wanted someone to take care of his treasure. After meeting, and writing to each other for a few years he decided that I could become the swords next custodian. That blade is still my longest and oldest blade - a one hole ubu tachi.

    Mentioned means date nagamei means long signature. Contrast that to undated two character signature or unsigned (mumei).

    I have seen sayagaki by Tanobe san where he attributes a blade to a specific smith whereas the papers say Den (smith). Many shinsa panels seem to not want to attribute to someone specific. Many tsuba papers just say Higo. They seem to not want to commit to a smith.

    I personally would take Tanobe San's opinion over some groups offering their opinion at shinsa in the U.S.A.

    Thanks! I'm a retired teacher and I am used to poor writing but this was way off base. I thought of Mitsu but it was too far off from what I expect to see.

    The ones that I saw had the piece of the blade in the mune.

    It might have been, but I know that I saw this on two different blades.

    It looks like the blade had large hi on both sides.

    I saw a blade with a kirikomi that had a piece of the blade that stuck this sword. There is no way that I would remove that kirikomi. I agree with the above comments on keeping them and if you can't live with them pass the blade on to someone who would be happy to have a battle tested blade.
