  1. And a tsuba too.....your a lucky man Robert! Cheers, p.s.-as to how guribori look mounted? Wonderful.
  2. Alton, An unexpectantly heartfelt answer. Keeping a loved one engaged is a good thing, whatever the means. All "things", no matter what pleasant distractions they provide, fall aside for the greater issues of life. Unfortunately we must interrupt our dreams with the trivia that is corporeal survival. Nam myoho renge kyo. Cheers,
  3. I have seen the film Ken, facinating it features your piece. An interesting form of provenance indeed! Cheers,
  4. Sorry you lost out Hamfish, better luck next time! One great thing about the web is that a new opportunity is always just around the bend. Cheers, p.s.-nice kurikata Frank listed, don't see these very often.
  5. The "works of art" are a bizarre selection...it just gets stranger and stranger. Most of this stuff is so rediculous, when you factor everything together, that it proves little treat to even the mildly informed. I do feel badly for the completely unprepared, but people must take some responsibility for themselves. So, for the billionth+ time...both shopping on Ebay without knowledge of what you are buying and performing major surgery at home, could end badly. SURPRISE!
  6. Axel, That is an interesting question. I imagine, having so much to choose from, selecting a lone item could present difficulties. Whatever Alton chooses should be telling. Many would, no doubt, enjoy seeing whatever things you wish to share. Cheers,
  7. You could try "liver of sulfur", if the gold plating is thin enough it could tone down the appearance quite a bit. Use in a well ventilated area and check progress periodically for adverse effects. All electro-chemical stripping techiniques will damage the objects surface appreciably. -S-
  8. Well done, somebody made a very nice buy. Fortune favors the bold! As I said...should clean up well. If it needs attention there is plenty of wiggle room(cost wise) considering the price paid.
  9. Grev, What was the purpose of the additions to the "monkey" tsuba?
  10. Stephen, Nice motif! Possible purchase? Time for Morita-san. John may have it, parts look right others I don't know....sorry, sosho is a bit of a struggle. Cheers,
  11. Grev, Nice finds. If the kozuka was made by the same maker I think he would have used the same attention to detail, so I would say not. BTW, that tsuba restoration is terrifyingly good! Cheers
  12. Robin. Glad you enjoyed it so, new slideshow sounds great and continued discussion on the subject would be welcome....it all sounds good to me. Cheers, -S-
  13. Quality looks fine, they should clean up well. Might want to stretch a bit as these are always a solid value.
  14. Always very desirable, they won't be cheap.....unless everyone is asleep. Best of luck! Cheers,
  15. Arnolds made an excellent point, although costly it is a relative bargain. If you want to see runaway prices check out the Chinese art market...It will make the prices of the best Japanese pieces look like giveaways.
  16. Grev, Does the gilding appear to be orginal or has it been electroplated, I can't tell from the pic? Is it gilt inside the nakago-ana?
  17. Grev, Precisely, now you've got it........or in the case of the ana(s) or serifs you don't! -S
  18. Grev, Without ana. p.s.- very ninja like,Curran. -S
  19. Chris, It's a rare motif, I have only encountered a few pieces, all of them of later manufacture. Two or three tanto, one wakizashi, and a small tsuba....they were all what I would call Meiji confections. I have also seen a couple of instances of small sharks teeth used instead of same on the tsuka. Cheers, p.s.- the blue (enamel ?) eyes on on that Catshark are striking!
  20. Grev, Over the years I have seen a great number of "NAMBAN" tsuba, those sans ana constitute a comparatively small number. I would say they are, from my experience, extremely uncommon. Cheers,
  21. Thanks Pete, Got the play on words, missed the spelling. Advertising sure has changed in presentation, yet the content remains essentially the same.
  22. Richard, You have inspired me, I will have to try this technigue. I think the image guality is guite good, all things considered, your 'standard" work is superb but this is better than I would have expected. As for your tsuba, the care taken in reducing its size is noteworthy, some previous owner obviously valued it. Pete, Most amusing but I don't get the correlation.....could you enLIGHTten (pun intended)me? Cheers,
  23. I like it rare or not, still a fine blade beautifully presented!
  24. I agree, intercession is pointless. This gentleman is either a "nutter", or worse! In the end the market usually sorts things out.
