@ Bruce: I agree with you that this thread is about a blade in great Kyu Gunto mounts that was picked up at less than the polish alone would cost. So for waht it is worth, this has been a good in terms of bang for the buck purchase. I am yet to see where Komonjo is misrepresenting items or making fraudulent deals. Until then I just think it is not fair to call him a dishonest seller and I doubt he would have been able to maintain such a good feedbackscore and to stay on the scene if he was. Of course there is junk among his sales those listings are likewise entitked s junk blades or koshirae. I think this more than blantly honest. If Komonjo puts on a blade signed Masamune without papers what should one expect? What other option is there than outting it on eBay. Melting it into a thamagen bar because it is Gimei? SO to put this to and end: Congrats on your Kyu Gunto Chris

@ John: Do you have a link to th Donkey auction? @ Chris: Maybe you feel lucky. As far as I am concerned I can only say that I always got delivered by Komonjo what I bought. One can regard Nihonto as a Gamble and then he has to be prepared to loose and to win. Or you can regard Nihonto a study journey so you ought to lear along its way. For all those who speal bad of Komonj like Brianm et all ... Which blades did you buy from Komnjo tahty ou did not feel happy about? If you were not happy about your purchases what did Komonjo do? Or ist it you never bought from him and do actually not have any skin in the game? I

Hello Chris, Mike is a honest vendor. He conseigns stuff and makes no false claims. He just turns things over and does not do any Koshirae building or mixing. If he sells a big name guy without paper he give the gurantee to happyly buy it beg when ruled Shoshin In your very case I do not think that someone took a Kyu Gunto Koshirae and a seperate blade. Chances of the peg hole and Saya matching another blade would be very low. Usually you can spot an assembled set up on how well the Habaki lines up with the Koiguchi.

How About Shedding Some Light On Tampa Show
TheGermanBastard replied to Tom Darling's topic in Nihonto
No word is also sort of a comment Some really nice things on the tables. Thanks for sharing the images. But it seems like it was pretty poorly attended? -
Sword in image 4 is interesting ...

That's a nice one to hang on. If pre Muromachi it is definately worth considering getting it restored!

I am not in for Mino but hard to tell from the images. Looks like plain Notare ... But I think it is later. Late Shinto or early Shinshinto.

Shows of just about any kind are nothing but an anachronism ... even strip shows! They have something in common: They are mainly attended by aging men. In times where peopel prefer to get their daily things delivered home it just sounds crazy to travel to see some old stuff ... even acquiring stuff not to mention OLD stuff sounds so out of time when you pay with a virtual wallet and true friends are to be found on face book only .... You won't bring back the VHS tape and you won't bring back shows. Also the internet will be succeeded by modern high tech stuff like fax machines or teletex ...

> The scabbard does fit it well, but it is about four inches longer than the blade itself (though internally, it appears to fit tightly). That's good! Because if it was 4 inches shorter than the blade you would have to cut off part of the blades tip to make it fit .... Yes it is a later set up by any means as these mounts were not available at the time the sword was made ... I have no reason to believe that these mounts had not been made for this blade in the 1st case. It is totally fine. The mounst ar ein good condition. Wheter the signatur eis SHoshin I have no idea. Would need to look up which Bobuyoshi this one wants to be. If it wants to be an average Joe it is likely Shoshin. If it wants to be a big old Koto guy then you are mst likely looking at a fake. The Hamon and blade do not suggest anything pre Muromachi eventhough the tang looks worn. The blade is good for what it is. Taking out the sigature question it is a solid piece which was probably priced accordingly. I suppose it came of komonjo? If Komonjo gives a name translation you can assume that his translation is accurate. A blade of this size makes sense for this kind of mount as it is supposed to be swung with one hand.

Signed Nobuyoshi. Koto. Probably Mid to late Muromachi.

Hello, I do nopt think those are Soten. Later Periode. Habaki is nice. The otehr fittings are average. The FK motif is nice. It might be due to your image sor wear but they lack details that would set them apart as above average items.

Tachi By Hachidai Tadayoshi With Zokumei (1836)
TheGermanBastard replied to Ray Singer's topic in Sold Archive
I forgot to mention that it has really good Nagasa, too. If I did not have my share of Tadayoshis I would likely buy it! -
Tachi By Hachidai Tadayoshi With Zokumei (1836)
TheGermanBastard replied to Ray Singer's topic in Sold Archive
I have a question Ray ... why has this not sold yet?! This is a very good oportunity for anyboy wanting to add a Tadayoshi to the collection. You will find some many Gimei Tadayoshi out of the woodwork or have the risk of getting the blade tiered due to the thin Hizen skin ... so this one is really good! -
Thank you Ray!

Personally I do think that the initial post is not worthy of discussuing and hence it was my fault to join the discussion. Lesson learned. I greet all arm chair talks. Not my cup of tea. Back into reality. Good bye.

Your whole question is leading too poor theories as it is way too vague to be even called theoretical. It is like proposing: There is a girl next door aged around 30 - 40 in good physical shape with brown hair. Uncle Joe says she is a cheerfull woman. Uncle Hank thinks she has good habits. He younger brothr however believes she is annoying. How likely is it that somebody will mary her? Answer: I do not know. Then again all the theorie is out of place when it comes to determining a market price. There is no formula. If you think there is one, you will likely also have wanted to invest into bit coins once. You can look up previous sold items that are similar. Then this is again a vague figure. Yesteday someone may have paid this and that price, on the very next day it will be another value. Also forget about this Kanteisho versus Toko Taikan nonsense. >You have to look at a blade on a case by case study. You can have a poor blade by an excellent smith or an excellent blade by a poorly reviewed guy. Now which one is worth more? I can give you a honest answer: I do not know. Look at dealer sites. At sites that actually sell swords and you have the best idea. Also you seem to be way too gun shy. A Daito with TBH in full polish at 2 - 3k? How should this figure work out when a polisher will take over 2k and the papers are atleast 500 bucks or even more when you are not based in Japan. That is like I was hoping to impress a princess with my Opel Astra. Hard try event if its fully fulled ...

To answer the posters question: Put it on eBay at 1 USD without reserve and you will see what others do think about its value and mor eimportant are willing to pay for it. The market decides on the price paid and no fancy expert. What someone puts out of his pocket and on the table is what it is worth at the end of the day - anythig else is academic talk.

I do not understand this

First of all this is a nice swod as I said earlier. Next it remains in okay condirion. There is no active rust ... Ha,on and Hada are visible. Getting it polished in Japan (!) and papered would cost you more than a sined Emura goes for. So keep it as it is ... and you can get a NTHK oppinion in the states while I personally doubt they would be able to pin it down precisely. It could be an Emura - or some other Gendai smith. It is what its is: A nice, qualiyt sword.
