  1. The attached photo shows a nakago of Tadayoshi 1st. Its shape is similar to the nakago in question. Also its mei looks like the mei in question. However, I feel somewhat strange about the last two kanji (忠吉).
  2. The mei looks "Ichijo (一乗)" of Goto (後藤).
  3. Here you are. The reading for the address may be very difficult. Sword # 1 front side (actually back side): 昭和十九年十二月 (Showa ju-ku nen ju-ni gatsu) 12th month of Showa 19th yr (Dec. 1944) Sword # 1 back side (actually front side): 兼茂 (Kaneshige) Sword # 2: 濃州三品義昭作之 (Noshu Mishina Yoshiaki saku kore) Mishina Yoshiaki (三品義昭) in Noshu made this. (Masubuchi Genzaburo)

  5. Practically, the explanation of sencho san is not wrong. However, more precisely…………….. 鍛える (kitaeru) (verb “forgeâ€) 鍛ふ (kitau) (= 鍛える but old term) 鍛え (kitae) (noun “forgingâ€) 鍛冶 (kaji) (noun “smithâ€)
  6. 濃州関住人包永鍛之 It reads “Noshu Seki (no) junin Kanenaga kore o Kitau (or Kitau kore)â€. Its exact translation may be “Kanenaga who is a resident of Seki in Noshu (province) forged thisâ€. Junin means just “residentâ€. He is listed as one of WWII Seki sword smiths on the following page, although I do not know if he was good or bad. His real name is Amaike Ginjiro (天池銀次郎) according to the list. http://www.geocities.com/alchemyst/seki.htm
  7. Here; 現 (* means Gendaito) 重則 (Shigenori) Era: Showa Province: Akita Value: 1,000,000 Yen Examples of mei: “Shigenori (重則)â€, “Nishimonai ju Shigenori kinsaku kore (西馬音内住重則謹作之)†Real name: Sato Goro (佐藤五郎) He was born in 1876 (Meiji 9th yr.) in 大流河 (* do not know its correct reading). He became a pupil of Shibata Ka (柴田果) in around 1929 (Showa 4th yr.) and stood on his own in 1940 (Showa 15th yr.). He died in 1951 (Showa 26th yr.).
  8. I see a clear difference in writing of the lower part of 近.
  9. Although I do not say that the mei is genuine, its proportion is not so bad as Ford says. The attached photo shows a comparison with genuine Kanemoto (aka Kanesada 11th).
  10. The mei on the kogatana reads "Kaga Jiro Fujiwara Morimichi (加賀次郎藤原盛道)".
  11. Ludolf, I could be wrong, but I think that the mei which include ikkanshi (一竿子) are not shodai but nidai.
  12. The pages below show photos and oshigata of Tadatsuna 2nd with tokubetsu hozon paper. http://sinogi.dee.cc/katarogu/1512/tada ... una-w.html http://sinogi.dee.cc/osigata/katana/ta% ... w26604.jpg
  13. Hi Darcy, The tanto might be an interesting finding. Shimada Shigetaro (嶋田繁太郎): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shigetaro_Shimada Minor corrections are as follows; 領 ryo (receive) 恩賜 onshi (gift from the Emperor) 繁太郎 Shigetaro (a given name) 於 oite (at)
  14. The writing of Kuni is not so special on Koto nakago. The attached photo shows such a character, although the mei is not Kunimune (國宗) but Rai Kunitoshi (来國俊). The right part of Kuni is not U (う). It only looks like that.
  15. Ah, I never thought of that.
  16. They say that they got the katana last September and the photos on ebay were not taken by them. I think that they know what they should do.
  17. I asked Token Sugita about the katana on eBay. They say that they still have the katana and its paper in their shop and they have never put it up at any auction before.
  18. The paper on ebay is identical with that on Token Sugita. The paper is for Juyo token with same No. 9275.
  19. At least the format of the paper looks OK to me. The Katana and its paper on the following site looks exactly same as that of ebay. :? http://www.token-net.com/juyotoken/juyo ... uke-1.html http://www.token-net.com/juyotoken/juyo ... uke-4.html
  20. Basically a tsuba was a practical part of arms rather than an art. The shape of the tsuba in question looks inappropriate for practical use to me. If it was an original shape, I am afraid that it often caught samurai's sleeve in his daily life.

    Kanteisho

The paper was issued by Nihon Bijutsuhin Hozon Shinsakai (日本美術品保存審査会). The organization is presided over by Honami Tsunemasa (本阿弥常政) who seems to reside in Okayama.

  23. Sorry, but that cannot be comparison. Unfortunately the chiseled name is Mitsumori (光守) which is another name of Keijo (桂乗).
  24. Just a thought of a beginner. Isn't it only a Fukure or Umegane?
