  2. Looking for a specific photo request: Does anyone here own a Pattern 4 aluminum-handle side-latch with a serial number in the 200k–205k range? I’ve noticed a subtle feature in the 130k range, and I’d like to check if the same detail appears in the 200k range. If you have one of these 200k aluminum side-latch models, I’d really appreciate a close-up photo (both sides) of the cast samegawa area around the pommel/sarute. Thanks so much for your help! -Sam

  5. It has Juyo papers and a nice koshirae. Price is unknown. I know a few people who asked and nobody got an answer. They were very kind to let me see the blade however and study it.

  6. I do that because true handmade swords can also be discussed in the Nihonto section since they do belong there too. As do military swords with older blades. It's worked ok for many years, I think we're good leaving it as is, and leaving the mods to make the call if something should be moved.

  7. iroe (色絵) – The term iroe, lit. “color(ed) picture,” is sometimes wrongly applied to different techniques of coloring by gilding or silvering, but should be used to describe any coloring of a motif, regardless of the technique used. [From Encyclopedia of Japanese Swords by Markus Sesko]

  10. Are you referring to what looks like a glop in the casting? Here is an example in the 202,000 serial range: WWII Japanese NCO OFFICERS SWORD SIDE LATCH & MATCHING NUMBERS ON SCABBARD #Y59

  12. That's what it showed when the auction closed. It's entirely possible that the sale fell through, so it ended up being unsold. Looks like who-ever backed out at $36K was probably wise!

  13. I just purchased a WW2 Japanese Army Type 98 Officer Samurai sword and would like to ask the experts out there for a translation of the tang. I was told it has the sword maker signature of Kanetaka. I’d really like to know exactly what the translation of the characters on the tang. This is my first samurai sword and would really like the exact translation. I appreciate all the help you can give me. Respectfully, Steve S. Aka Bubba 007

  15. https://kanji.sljfaq.org This site works well for unknown kanji when they’re drawn clearly on the blade. You draw them and once you have the correct or most of the correct kanji, you can start your search and find the correct smith pretty easily using other nihonto-specific indexes.

  19. I am sure this info has been posted before but definitely interesting for those that may have interest of the Ronin blades documented: THE 47 RONIN AND THEIR SWORDS Note: the numbers in parenthesis after the sword smith's name refer to the Kanji tables on this site. Thus Norinaga (1,2) refers to the first Kanji for Nori and the second Kanji for Naga. The information is given in the sequence: name of ronin; age; katana mei and length; wakizashi mei and length; other weapons carried. Only 33 warriors are documented.
