I feel like you haven’t even looked at the blade it can’t be a Chinese fake when it lieterally in Japanese says “blade of kunishige resident of bungo.  And getting it from the great grandson of a Japanese ww1 or 2 military officer. Now I was looking for help but y’all seem to be suckling lame sorry you wasted my time and energy I thought this was going to be a great community but instead admins shot me down without even looking or asking about it.  You should really work on yourselves so maybe someone else who could be a valuable part of the community doesn’t get s**t on immediately thanks

Hi Don,

Unfortunately based on the photos, its relatively easy to tell the sword you've presented isn't of Japanese origin. The biggest tell is the damascus steel like pattern of the blade.

Real Japanese swords or even WW2 mass-produced swords don't show any such damascus looking grain and the fake blades often found all have them.

https://www.jssus.org/nkp/fake_japanese_swords.html <- This link has common tells of fake swords and if you look at the grain section, you'll see that it looks exactly like what you've presented here.

I know stories of how blades were acquired in the war and whatnot are always emotional and sincere, but in this case the blade presented is not real.

@Don sweet

I thought Seattle had a Japanese sword club, but I cannot find it.  @Scogg Sam, do you know of one?  I did find one that meets in Vancouver.  You are welcome to find a local sword expert.  But we see many of these Damascus blades every year, and it is something used by the Chinese not Japanese sword makers.  BTW, the signature on your blade is not Kuneshige.  I don't recognize it at all.

Hi Don,

Unfortunately, I'm not currently aware of any active sword clubs meeting in Seattle. As for the group that used to gather in Vancouver, I've heard rumors that they may no longer be active, though I can't confirm that definitively. There are occasional stories of Nihonto meetups in the broader region, but they tend to be either very private or no longer occurring :dunno:.

That said, I'm in the process of establishing a new club for the Pacific Northwest. Our first meeting is scheduled for Sunday, December 7th, in Tualatin, Oregon. If you're interested in attending, feel free to send me a message for the address. Most of our current members are based in Oregon, but we also have a few from Washington, as well as others from Canada, Alaska, and Idaho. We're planning to hold one or two gatherings per year, and you're more than welcome to join (participation is free).

On the topic of the sword in question, I do have to agree with the opinions above. I know it's disappointing, but in my view, this piece is not an authentic Japanese sword. It's a reproduction that appears to have been made with the intention of imitating certain features, but the workmanship throughout is inconsistent with genuine Nihonto or any other military sword of Japan.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I hope this helps clarify things.

Best regards,
-Sam

Spare us the indignation. It takes literally 1 second of looking at any part of this to easily tell it's a cheap and not even well done Chinese fake. You clearly have no experience with knowing what a real signature, real nakago shape, real fittings and real blade looks like.
We are blunt here, there is zero reason to coddle anyone, especially when the fake is so far from a real one.
You could have showed just the bottom inch of the tang and we would have told you it's a fake.
How about you take it to a sword shop or expert, and if it turns out to be real, I'll Paypal you $100. But if it's a fake, you send the forum $50 for giving us hell when we're trying to tell you the truth in an honest manner so you can stop spending time researching it for no reason?

Hi Don,
to many of us here, it is obviously a fake even from the photos you have sent. just seeing the material of the sword we can tell that it is a modern reproduction. There are many glaring signs that the sword is not a real Japanese sword. i know you feel that people didn't look at it before saying it wasn't real but it honestly doesn't need anymore looking.

i would like to say, no one s**t on you immediatly, but gave you direct feedback that the sword wasn't real. a lot of us have been there, i've bought a fake before by accident, luckily i could return it.
unfortunately for yourself it seems someone has told you it was a bring back from ww2 but sadly that isn't the case.
