Kmad Posted April 10, 2024 Report Posted April 10, 2024 Hi All For those of you who have great memories I am reasonable lucky in pulling interesting items out of the woodwork Well here is my latest find Terrible pictures as per usual from the seller, and it is actually a trade as opposed to purchase. I have 100 euro into the item I am thinking about swapping. So money is coming into it. So what do you think I might have and are there many red flags Handle has not been taken off so no idea as to what is underneath. all I have been told is the blade is sharp and no chips. What do you think Regards to all Ken Quote
ROKUJURO Posted April 10, 2024 Report Posted April 10, 2024 Looks like a well used TANTO. Considering the number of related photos, the seller seems to love the TSUKA which indeed looks o.k. to me. Not the cheapest version of a KOSHIRAE, but without seeing the blade properly and the NAKAGO, any comment is useless. 1 Quote
Kmad Posted April 10, 2024 Author Report Posted April 10, 2024 I agree Jean, The gamble is if I get them to take off the Tsuka and there is writing on the Nakago and the deal will probably be scuppered or I just take it as is and get to see what is under neath, might be nothing might be something. The sum of the parts shown look to be of good enough quality and the Habaki looks good also, opinions welcome and just seeing what others might do or think Regards Ken Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted April 10, 2024 Report Posted April 10, 2024 You could ask for better pics of the blade. You can take the gamble if you’re bored and you’re not attached to the €100 object you’re offering in exchange. (Maybe it has no ‘chips’, but does the seller know what tiny hagire are for example?) Lee Bray Posted April 10, 2024 Report Posted April 10, 2024 Appears to have no seppa so the fitting and originality of the tsuka has to be questioned. Aside from that, nowt much else to see but can't really go wrong for 100 euros. 2 Quote
dkirkpatrick Posted April 10, 2024 Report Posted April 10, 2024 The sugata leads me to think this isn’t anything earth shattering but as has been said for a hundred euro. I would think the tsuba alone would be worth 75-100 to someone. 2 Quote
Brian Posted April 10, 2024 Report Posted April 10, 2024 A kozuka/kogatana are worth 100. What's the delay? 3 Quote
Scogg Posted April 10, 2024 Report Posted April 10, 2024 Like has been mentioned, 100 euro is a great price. Even if the blade has a fatal flaw, at 100 euro the fittings easily make up for it. ALTHOUGH.... What is the item you're trading, if you don't mind me asking? If you got it for 100, but it's worth 500 - Then it's a much riskier gamble, IMO Good luck! -Sam 1 Quote
Kmad Posted April 10, 2024 Author Report Posted April 10, 2024 Its all a bit of Fun just including you guys on the dealings and Sam has asked the question I myself am pondering I got 2 brass signal Cannons (30cm barrels, from 1920's or so ) not worth much to me but I got them very cheap at an auction so that is the trade. I would expect to get 400 for the 2 Cannons if in the correct auction but that would realize 300 to me in hand so I guess that is the cost I am paying for the tanto. Which i still think is an OK price Thanks for the interest in my musing of what to do. Regards Ken 2 Quote

Bugyotsuji Posted April 10, 2024 Report Posted April 10, 2024 I would take the brass signal cannons any day of the week! Maybe that’s just me though. 4 Quote
John C Posted April 10, 2024 Report Posted April 10, 2024 I'm pretty lucky at finding 100 dollar items as well. The only problem is, I usually pay 300 dollars for them! John C. 2 Quote
Kmad Posted April 10, 2024 Author Report Posted April 10, 2024 One Cannon and a percussion pistol was the final price and the deal was done. A brown bess bayonet in scabbard was also thrown into the deal. Here are some terrible quick pictures on the phone. I cant get pics right way up apologies about that. and the hamon I just can't capture in the light of our kitchen spotlights. So what have and apologies again for the images 2 Quote
ROKUJURO Posted April 11, 2024 Report Posted April 11, 2024 Ken, to help us identifying, please post - pictures of the NAKAGO and the 'naked' blade always with tip pointing upwards - photos taken directly from above - with light from the side - well focused - showing details like HAMON, HADA and HATARAKI - HAMACHI, MUNEMACHI and KISSAKI are important - against a dark background to get a good contrast - and presented as cut-out so nothing is distracting from the blade itself Quote
