DTM72 Posted January 19, 2022 Report Posted January 19, 2022 Just picked up a Type 3 this weekend with a beautiful blade that has a suguha hamon with a tight and thin nioi-guchi. Cannot make out any hada due to someone using what I suspect as never-dull. When examining the nakago, I have never seen one in such rough shape. Large hammer marks and it looks to be a 3" long forging lamination near the mune midway on the length of the nakago. Was this a late war handmade blade or remnants of a machine forge? Dan Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted January 19, 2022 Report Posted January 19, 2022 I'll make a post to say "I don't know what to say!" Your guess sounds as logical as anything I could speculate. Quote

george trotter Posted January 19, 2022 Report Posted January 19, 2022 Gosh, just yesterday a RS with and unsigned blade was mentioned on another post...now you have picks of another one...amazing. In 50 years of collecting I have never seen mumei tangs in RS mounts and now ...2 in 2 days. Both mounts are 'low end' Seki RS mounts usually found on showato. Interesting. As they say, never say never with Japanese swords. Regards, 1 1 Quote
DTM72 Posted January 19, 2022 Author Report Posted January 19, 2022 Also just realized this has the celluloid same. So the RS and my Emura both have celluloid same. I've learned something tonight. 1 Quote
BANGBANGSAN Posted January 19, 2022 Report Posted January 19, 2022 Not the same like yours but kind of close... 1 1 Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted January 19, 2022 Report Posted January 19, 2022 Oh, it's hurting my eyes!!! Dang, two of these. They must be late war. With what we know about sword production being moved out of country in the last year, I wonder if these were made in occupied territory. It's the first thing I thought about when I saw the "workmanship" of those nakago. Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted January 19, 2022 Report Posted January 19, 2022 Again, that looks like an oil quenched sword than handmade. Together with the nakago and mounts it is likely Showato made in the last stages of the war. Quote

The look reminds me of the surface as it has been hammered, before the files and shavers make everything on a level plane. It is almost as if it was a rush job ...no one cares about the nakago... it's covered by the tsuka...get it out there where it belongs...hurry hurry! 1 Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted January 19, 2022 Report Posted January 19, 2022 Very well could be. I mention the island swords, too, because this is how their nakago always look. If this were the case for yours, it's still a Japanese officer sword, but simply made "over there somewhere". Quote
DTM72 Posted January 19, 2022 Author Report Posted January 19, 2022 So 2 of the four swords I just got are on the odd side. Wonder how the next two will fare. Lol Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted January 19, 2022 Report Posted January 19, 2022 Hi Dan, well lets hope they are less odd and more normal....like a good old fashioned, regulation, run of the mill....Gassan Sadakatsu Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted January 19, 2022 Report Posted January 19, 2022 Let's see your Nagoya Type 95 NCO gunto! Quote

DTM72 Posted January 19, 2022 Author Report Posted January 19, 2022 Don't think I'll be keeping the NCO. Doesn't really fit the rest of my collection. Quote

PNSSHOGUN Posted January 19, 2022 Report Posted January 19, 2022 The NCO swords are fairly popular so shouldn't have too many troubles moving it on. Of the 4 swords the Kai Gunto is the most attractive and interesting. Quote

And if you watch a Japanese swordsmith forging a blade, you will see that even a raw NAKAGO is way more precise and nicer looking than this one even without finishing work with SEN and file. I cannot see much of a HAMON and HADA on these photos, but that may be due to my old eyes. Quote
