Bruce Pennington Posted July 3, 2020 Report Posted July 3, 2020 Just curious if anyone has read Ohmura's new book yet. I know it's in Japanese, so it will have to be someone who can read Japanese. I'd post the title and link, but my searching skills are so poor, I can't find it. It was actually mentioned on NMB when it came out. Quote
celt72 Posted July 3, 2020 Report Posted July 3, 2020 I bought a copy but my Japanese isn't good enough to actually read it. Quote
celt72 Posted July 3, 2020 Report Posted July 3, 2020 And by the way the book covers the complete history of Japaneese swords and doesn't focus just on WWII era. 1 Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted July 3, 2020 Author Report Posted July 3, 2020 So, maybe not useful to have for a non-speaker like me then? Quote
16k Posted July 3, 2020 Report Posted July 3, 2020 He has Chris, but in Japanese, unfortunately and I’m afraid we won’t ever see a translation... Quote
16k Posted July 3, 2020 Report Posted July 3, 2020 That’s the one: http://ohmura-study.net/601.html as for the Dagostini magazine, it’s easy to find on fleabay, but I got the one on Muramasa and was disappointed. They only talk about one sword, the rest being generalities. Not worth it I think. 1 Quote
b.hennick Posted July 3, 2020 Report Posted July 3, 2020 If done for a small group for personal use there is usually no problem. They would not be for resale. Quote
Brian Posted July 4, 2020 Report Posted July 4, 2020 If someone wants to investigate the possibility and get a quote from Markus, we could crowdfund it. Maybe even with Ohmura san's permission, as he could share in the proceeds. 1 Quote
SteveM Posted July 5, 2020 Report Posted July 5, 2020 My very rough guess based on page count would be maybe $15k to translate the book from Japanese to English. At 243 pages, and translating 4 pages a day, I reckon it would take maybe 3 months, give or take a couple of weeks for proofreading and rewriting. The cost and time required will drop if there are a lot of illustrations, but I think this is offset by the increase in cost that comes from the nature of the specialized and technical vocabulary used. 1 Quote
Bruno Posted July 7, 2020 Report Posted July 7, 2020 Someone I know who is fluent in Japanese, bought it. He says there is nothing really more that is already on the website. 1 Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted July 7, 2020 Author Report Posted July 7, 2020 Ah, that makes sense, and pretty much answers the reason for my post. An english version might be nice to have in hand, but I'll pass, then, on the Japanese one since I can get a passable english version online. Quote
16k Posted July 7, 2020 Report Posted July 7, 2020 The thing is, do we have everything that's on his site? I mean, not reading Japanese, we may have overlooked some stuff. For example, I don’t think I’d ever seen anything about the clay used For yakiire before last week. Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted July 7, 2020 Author Report Posted July 7, 2020 That's a good point, Jp. Quote
celt72 Posted July 7, 2020 Report Posted July 7, 2020 Just curious, what does the book cost? Brian it was $28.49 plus $5.99 shipping from Yesasia.com. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like it is available anymore on their site. Quote
16k Posted July 7, 2020 Report Posted July 7, 2020 It can probably be purchased from Amazon.jp, but I don’t have the Japanese abilities necessary to find it. EDIT: There it is. I wanted to buy it as it’s quite cheap, but would have had to create a new account, so I gave up. https://www.amazon.co.jp/真説“戦う日本刀”-“最高”と呼べる武器性能の探究-大村-紀征/dp/4814202571/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=大村刀&qid=1594151989&sr=8-1 Quote
