RobertM Posted April 17, 2020 Report Posted April 17, 2020 So picked this up last minute on eBay based on some average photos. What bugs me is the lack of attention to detail in the rim where it's plain uneven in parts. Any ideas on school (hizen?) or just late Edo period hobby work? Quote
Fuuten Posted April 17, 2020 Report Posted April 17, 2020 No idea. But why bid on something you dont feel much for in the first place? Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted April 17, 2020 Report Posted April 17, 2020 Interesting possibilities run through the mind. Thanks for posting. Quote
RobertM Posted April 17, 2020 Author Report Posted April 17, 2020 Was bored from lockdown and from the fairly poor eBay pics it looked OK for a low bid. It almost has a nanban style look with shakudo insert in ana. Personally I find the design pleasing but the execution lacking. Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted April 17, 2020 Report Posted April 17, 2020 Don't think it's nanban, & I rather like it. Bushu or Choshu? Quote
RobertM Posted April 17, 2020 Author Report Posted April 17, 2020 Some of the tendrils are carved in 3d overlapping without touching. Not something I have seen before on bushu or choshu tsuba. Quote

Rich S Posted April 17, 2020 Report Posted April 17, 2020 Robert - Not with Nihonto stuff, but I am starting a "Covid boredom" pocket knife collection Rich 2 Quote
ROKUJURO Posted April 17, 2020 Report Posted April 17, 2020 Robert,to me your TSUBA has indeed a HIZEN feeling. The 3 D tendrils and the unusual SEPPA-DAI shape let me think so. 1 Quote
Blazeaglory Posted April 19, 2020 Report Posted April 19, 2020 Dealing with Daimyo54....nuff said. Haha I could understand your point but It's kinda funny that several years ago I happened across that particular seller by chance and in less than a week I had found a few decent Nihonto. I was on my way to a 4th item (which was a really clean Shobu zukuri O-suriage wakizashi that had zero flaws and was in such a nice polish) But the moment I pulled the trigger another buyer had beat me to it... But since then, nothing. I've been checking daily for years now and have not seen anything close to what I found within that short amount of time. Seems also they've raised their prices quite a bit. They do have some decent yoroi once in a while tho. 1 Quote
RobertM Posted April 19, 2020 Author Report Posted April 19, 2020 Was bought from a fellow UK seller, I'm not familiar with Daimyo54. Quote
b.hennick Posted April 19, 2020 Report Posted April 19, 2020 Bought menuki which turned out to be new. Lost on return. Bought a yari, turned out to be new. Now when I see the sellers name,I don't bother to read the listing. There is a thread on this.... 2 Quote
Michael 101 Posted April 19, 2020 Report Posted April 19, 2020 I rather like this one - and for its original owner to bother adding a shakudo insert to one of the hitsuana I think he did too. the carving is slightly naive but I think it gives it more charm than more precise work. From its carving style and the seppa dai shape I would think Hizen. nice find ! Michael 1 Quote

I see things allot of times that they're advertising as Koto or older that look new. Quote
MauroP Posted April 22, 2020 Report Posted April 22, 2020 Hi Robert, the rim looks like a tomogane-fukurin, i.e. a separate piece made with the same metal, so it could be a later add-on or substitution. Quote
RobertM Posted April 25, 2020 Author Report Posted April 25, 2020 Hi Mario, I've heard of shakudo rims being added but never iron. Does anyone have an example? Quote
