Justin Grant Posted April 16, 2020 Report Posted April 16, 2020 My pedestrian attempt. The smiths name, which may be Akii or ??? Not sure how to read the two kanji in a name. My dictionary says the second kanji in a name reading is “I” pronounced eeh, the first kanji in a name would be a bunch of different ways. Mitsu is the most common but with the following kanji, it suggests many different possibilities. Anyway, the other few lines date it to the Southern Court in 1390 ish and a day and month. Can’t make out the far left line. To blurry and I’m not that good at it. Quote
uwe Posted April 16, 2020 Report Posted April 16, 2020 To start with the nengo: ”元中三年丙寅六月七日”, (7th day in June 1386, Hinoe Tora) ....first column could be “先祖代々“ (senzodaidai = ancestral, hereditary, generation after generation....etc) 2 Quote
uwe Posted April 16, 2020 Report Posted April 16, 2020 Second column: “?山?七” Far left column (without warranty): “如日恵光?” (last kanji illegible for me) Hopefully someone chimes in to fill the gaps... Quote
Justin Grant Posted April 16, 2020 Report Posted April 16, 2020 Thanks for the clarity on the first line. I assumed on my phone screen that the last kanji was a saku and the first was the Mitsu kanji. Good read Uwe. Quote
uwe Posted April 16, 2020 Report Posted April 16, 2020 Thanks for the clarity on the first line. I assumed on my phone screen that the last kanji was a saku and the first was the Mitsu kanji. Good read Uwe. Many thanks Justin! I’m constantly trying to improve my slowly increasing learning curve. Rocky path, but a lot of fun, at least until I stare at a few kanji again completely haphazardly, asking me why the heck...... .....ending up admiring the professionals here at the forum during my retreat.... 1 Quote
Blazeaglory Posted April 16, 2020 Report Posted April 16, 2020 Is it real? That's Not something you see everyday! Really cool! How'd you come across it if I may ask? Is it heavy? Quote
SteveM Posted April 16, 2020 Report Posted April 16, 2020 The last (far left) line is the name of a temple in Kyōto 智恵光院 ちえこういん Chiekō-in https://kyotofukoh.jp/report1053.html 2 Quote

raaay Posted April 17, 2020 Author Report Posted April 17, 2020 Hi Steve sorry the link would not work for me ? Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted April 17, 2020 Report Posted April 17, 2020 That's gorgeous, Ray! Even though we're much closer to Japan, there are few Japanese gongs, compared to Chinese. Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted April 17, 2020 Report Posted April 17, 2020 'Orin', 'Rin', Singing bowl. 鈴 or 錀 https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E9%88%B4_(%E4%BB%8F%E5%85%B7) (They hit one in the Wiki link.) 1 Quote
raaay Posted April 17, 2020 Author Report Posted April 17, 2020 Steve / ken / Uwe / Justin / All . many thanks, A singing bowl makes perect sense , when it is struck and it sings and just when you think it has stopped ! if you put your ear as close as possible to the gong without touching you can feel + hear the gong still going on and on . PS. did the other picture show up a clearer reading of the inscription. 1 Quote
uwe Posted April 17, 2020 Report Posted April 17, 2020 Much clearer Ray! But still have my problems with the first and third kanji second column.... Quote
Guest Posted April 17, 2020 Report Posted April 17, 2020 Good afternoon Ray, Not only prints, but artifacts as well..... If it helps,I visited Chiekou - In, back in 1994. Looking at my diary for that trip: The Temple was founded in 1294. As I recall, it is now, quite a small Temple, linked to the Jodo ( Pure Land ) sect of Buddhism. It moved location many times across Kyoto, down its illustrious history. It might be an idea, given the date inscribed on your Rin, to contact the assistant to the current Abbot with some images. Lots of things were dispersed down the years, particularly in the turmoil of both the Meiji Restoration and recent mid 20th Century events I don't have any contact details, but I do recall it was in the Kamigyou area, a few blocks from the old Imperial Palace. Maybe one of the, to use a "Draeger" term "Japan hands" can take this further. PS Draeger refers to the late Donn F Draeger. There are many references to him here on NMB 1 Quote
SteveM Posted April 17, 2020 Report Posted April 17, 2020 The second column is a name 松山囗七 Matsuyama ?-shichi The third one is a bit too abbreviated for me. 2 Quote

Bugyotsuji Posted April 19, 2020 Report Posted April 19, 2020 Hammering one of these out of a single sheet is a time-consuming process and a good one in the right market can be worth quite a bit. Quote
