Very beautiful. I wish it were possible to see the hamon better in their photos. -
Need Help Mei Translation Of Wakizashi
Ray Singer replied to sechan's topic in Translation Assistance
That is the mei of a smith (however I am not offering an opinion that the mei is authentic). https://nihontoclub.com/view/smiths/meisearch?type=All&mei_op=contains&mei=Shigekuni -
A two piece habaki with the inner done in polished shakudo is one of Brian Tschernega's trademark workstyles.

Please Help With The First Two Characters Of This Mei
Ray Singer replied to b.hennick's topic in Translation Assistance
It certainly does appear to read 濃州関兼住 (Noshu Seku Kanesumi). -
Hi Rich, this is shakudo over a copper base. Photos of the habaki and tanto attached. Best regards, Ray
-
It is difficult to see from mobile phone photos, but the copper color does show through in those areas where the patina of the shakudo has worn.
-
Coincidently a very nice hamidashi tanto arrived this morning with a shakudo foil habaki. The first I can recall owning in years.
-
With the caveat that I don't have any reference examples of Ieshige on hand, I have some concerns about the authenticity of the mei. I'll check if I have any mei examples when I return home (if someone has not provided a reference before then).

Kashu ju Fujiwara Ieshige saku. Does this have a Kaga nakago-jiri? Difficult to see in the photo on mobile.

What Was The Purpose For Red Urushi In Hi?
Ray Singer replied to Baka Gaijin's topic in General Nihonto Related Discussion
Discussed here a few times. http://www.militaria.co.za/nmb/topic/4823-swords-hi-painted-or-lacquered-red/ http://www.militaria.co.za/nmb/topic/16257-red-substance-on-the-blade-of-the-sword/ http://www.militaria.co.za/nmb/topic/6306-red-lacquer-in-the-bo-hi/ -
My impression is that this is trying to read 千手院 (Senjuin).

The one negative I have heard regarding shakudo habaki is that polished shakudo may tend to show fingerprints. There is a craftsmen who specializes in two piece habaki with polished shakudo on the inside. They look great when clean however, like those expensive black iPhones, tend to show prints easily.

I would say aesthetic reasons. The artist may have felt it would be beautiful this way (and in some cases I agree). See attached.

Here is the Kusakabe Kimbei image I mentioned above. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kusakabe_Kimbei

Hi Greg, if it would be of interest I have one by his student Kusabe Kimbei which I can share with you this evening. It was formerly from a large corporate art collection (where I was curator). Later this company closed and this is one of two artworks I purchased.

Possible Periode?
Ray Singer replied to TheGermanBastard's topic in General Nihonto Related Discussion
This sugata reminds me of Kiyomaro school (and I believe there are examples of this sugata w/ bo-hi from the works of Nobuhide). That said, I'd like to be cautious with an opinion given the photos and condition (not much detail can be seen in the full sugata and workmanship). Unfortunately we've also seen this shape (and unusual nakago appearance) from our friend in Rockville, MD. -
Possible Periode?
Ray Singer replied to TheGermanBastard's topic in General Nihonto Related Discussion
There is an odd appearance to the nakago. There are areas of deep pitting along with flat areas that appear very fresh (flat, lacking texture, yasurimei, etc). The patina seems a bit strange as well (in the way that the appearance is fairly uniform across both pitted and featureless areas). The nakago does not immediately give me a feeling of great age, ie. Nambokucho or earlier. -
Does This Look Like The Real Deal To You Guys?
Ray Singer replied to Matt300ZXT's topic in Military Swords of Japan
Many good pointers here. http://www.jssus.org/nkp/fake_japanese_swords.html -
Unsure if it came through, but Stephen is asking if the sword has ubu-ba like the attached photo (not ubu nakago). * photo credit yakiba.com
