  1. It's almost as if the guys trying to sell it or something
  2. The upper end of US smith custom swords is very popular lately, nothing to regret at all in my books. The chinese blades, well, they're good for cutting large objects into smaller ones. I think you've made a fine choice to go for excellent quality early in your nihonto collecting career proper.
  3. I'm with Brian on this one, very similar to many shizue komi I've seen. Would be more interesting if it still had the cane koshirae.
  4. The nakago isn't promising, looks like a chinese made sword to me, I'm afraid.
  5. Pictures of the mei are still quite blurry, if you can get some better lighting and crisp pictures and post it in the translation section you might have some luck.
  6. You might have more luck in the Military Swords section, John.
  7. Hi John, we will need much better pictures, including the signature, before we can give you any useful information. Everyone posting so far is named John, this will get confusing fast!
  8. I think Jussis approach has alot of merit, I want to be sure the sword will be right for me many years down the track, not just right now.
  9. Replacement habaki will be tricky, even on these NCO's there's always a bit of unique fitting. My advice would be to throw a seppa or two under it or hit it with some shim stock.
  10. Florin, check the classifieds section here regularly, often there will be nihonto at very affordable prices perfect for entry level study and collection. Not too uncommon to find a wakizashi for well under $1000 USD.
  11. I hope you didn't pay too much for it, hopefully it looks ok from a distance on a wall!
  12. My only guess would be is that it's on consignment.
  13. Not uncommon to find unusual rust patterns on Gunto, they were military swords and subject to harsh environments and conditions.
  14. A quick look at the examples of Fuyuhiro online it seems "hagashira shinogi ni kakaru" (thanks, Guido) or at least the hamon running very close to the shinogi, was a bit of a signature for one or more of the generations. https://www.aoijapan.net/katana-orikaeshi-fumeiorikaeshi-mei-unknown-mumei/ http://www.sanmei.com/contents/en-us/p1510.html http://new.uniquejapan.com/a-fuyuhiro-katana/
  15. Not at all, my first thoughts were it was a Shinto blade so it was quite interesting to hear it was attributed Muromachi. Do we have any further information about the blade or generation of smith, Ben?
  16. Thank you, they really can be nice decorative pieces. Do you have any examples of the nakagos used in flower arranging?
  17. You may be the 0.0001% lucky guy who got something original from China!
  18. Two reports of fraud, excuses, stories and excessive information..... Stay away.
  19. As always fantastic information from Darcy both from a collectors and sellers point of view.
  20. Japanese Antique Sharksin Last Samurai Samurai Sword Set Katana With Stand ;-)
  21. They are nice little curios if you can get them cheap, especially to study blade construction, I picked up this one a few months ago and it has given me alot of pleasure looking at it closely through a magnifier now and again.
  22. Interesting hamon indeed, was this a mid shinto era blade?
  23. If anything this shows how stable exceptional blades have stayed in price over the years, and dare I say centuries.
  24. In rough shape but seems OK from those pictures.
