  3. I have one with a similar palette, Aizu Shoami
  4. Will shinsa you you all you wish? They can be lacking in detail My sword came back as Tadayoshi but no generation which was annoying!
  5. I wonder how many 'dots' there are on tsuba 100?
  6. Nice to have you back
  7. I was surprised when I ordered my book from from the Samurai Museum in Germany as it was subject to duty of around 20% I thought books/teaching aids were duty free! I have queried it but as yet no reply
  8. Thanks Michael for taking the time to post these images and to all the organizers who put on this show in the most trying of times
  9. Nice to know you commissioned this 'tiger' tsuba. I though it would be a Russian Oligarch Ditto to all the previous comments - The video must have been viewed so many times I think it was also an inspiration to all the new tsuba makers
  10. Hi Glen Kobushi-gata = fist shaped and Kawari-gata = irregular shape. So I would say if it is not fist shaped (kobushi gata) then it is kawari gata My tsuba example of a kobushi gata shape
  11. Isn't the shape of your tsuba Kobushi gata (fist shaped)?
  12. This is a bit like selecting a favorite music track for me this could change every day The problem I have with your collection is finding one I don't like I will have a look back over your previous posts but I can't see me coming up with a gold, silver and bronze What if I asked you which three tosogu you would take if the house was on fire I don't think you could give me an answer and would rather perish in the flames!!!!!!!!

    Techniques

Thanks for your links and comments: When I asked about layering I wasn't too clear with my question On both examples I couldn't see any indication of layering through the side view of any ana so I thought the mokume was achieved thro etching and not layered I see what is meant by deceptive thinning and in part this is a true statement I put the raised side on a flat surface and looked at the gap which appears around 2mm so 1mm less than measures FYI

    Techniques

Hi I'm looking again at my tsuba and I'd like to learn more about the techniques used so there will be more examples This one shows how high the form can be. The raised section is about 3mm higher than the general surface This seems a massive amount of up raising up from the the base. I'm sure this is not in two sections How easy would this be to achieve? Layering. Some tsuba were folded and some etched. Is there some general pointers to tell the difference between these types?
  15. Your No 82 is very similar to one in my Birmingham tsuba book Shoami - 75 x 70 x 6.2
  16. Wonderful and mesmerizing. See how prefect the shapes follow the center line and the position at 90¯ The condition and surface wow. One I'd like to see in hand along side your other tsuba etc This is one post I do not want to see ending

    Honesty

Can't be fairer than this description Seller notes: “It's Real old. Please check the photos carefully and there may be scratches that do not appear in the photo. Thank you for your understanding in advance. Please feel free to contact us as we will take additional pictures if there is a part you want to see and be aware that if you cancel the transaction after bidding or purchasing you will not be able to purchase from me again.” Description Tsuba is the hand guard mounted on a Japanese sword. It serves to keep the user's hand from sliding up onto the blade of the sword, to counterbalance the weight of the blade, to communicate the social standing, beliefs and tastes of its owner, and, to some degree, to protect the hand from an opponent's blade. There are no samurai now. Please use it as a figurine, paper weight, or coaster. Please be aware that if you cancel the transaction after bidding or purchasing you will not be able to purchase from me again. Please check the photos carefully and there may be scratches that do not appear in the photo. I've looked at a few Sue-Seki short swords and most have the same basic shape and kaeri of the boshi I'll try and get a few more references Chris you said about the reshaped kissaki but wouldn't the hamon around the kissaki look uneven?

A PM also advised against sending for Shinsa I thought this to be the case it's just that I have a mumei Tairyûsai Sôkan that has old papers so it would be a two sword deal with Paul Martin if I decided to send them I would really like a few more comments

To sum up Maybe sue-seki but unusual yasurime. Do any other schools seem likely? Circa 1600 Is it worth submitting for shinsa?
  23. Don't forget these is a size limit on attachments. You can see the limits when you start a new post I make sometimes make my images a little smaller if there are a few to show

Hi My newest nihonto I've spoken to Paul B and he has given me a few pointers and I hope to show it to him when Covid permits In the meantime I welcome any comments especially seeing how accurate the kantei exercises have been over the last few weeks And finally to Shinsa or not to Shinza that is the question? Details: An Ubu hira-zukuri tanto, iori mune with no sori. The hada is of itame and Mokume type. The hamon is a shallow midare/gunome in nioi deki. There is some evidence of activity such as sunagashi (Sunagashi= drifting sands- it describes activity within the hamon where lines of nie join together and flow parallel to the hamon. It looks a bit like masame hada inside the hamon running through the hamon. The boshi is sugu and narrow possibly the kissaki has been reshaped. There is no kaeri evident. The nakago appears to be ubu it is short and slightly funa-gata in appearance and ends in a ha-agari kurijiri. The Yasurime appear to be kiri but not clear. The polisher added: It’s a nice Tanto and lots of activity, the hamon at the kissaki was really unusual and two different colours of steel so at first I thought it was utsuri.
