Thanks for this info on an unknown subject for me I can see also the difference's between the two types This one an iron hook with a brass striking shaft and I think I can see some lathes 'lines'
-
Not sure were to put this I bought this today but have no real about it but this is what I do know: Jitte (sword breaker) Edo police weapon. Hook is called kagi It is quite heavy Can it be dated? There is a variation called a kabutowari (helmet breaker) so it would be nice to know the difference between the two types Surface damage?

This must be a copy/cast tsuba I hope someone proves me wrong

Thanks for all the replies and now I understand Fords comments This was a surprise: As far as I know, soldering and brazing are rarely used in TOSOGU making

I bought these just over ten years ago I was thinking about these menuki the other day and the comments made by Ford Hallam after seeing it in hand, stating the thin gold plating was a 'lost' process Anyone who knew Ford also knew he had a wicked sense of humour so what are the NMB members thoughts? Details but nothing confirmed School: Goto Circa 1700 Thin plate gold was used rather than gold leaf Gissha (Old oxcart for nobles) Shakudo and gold Size 32 x 14mm I'd welcome any comments

Spoke too soon. Duty = £41 which I was ok with -
I've seen loads of tsuba boxes but this has the lip on the top rather than the bottom Is the covering thin bamboo or paper? Looks home made especially with the two pins

I received my tsuba a few minutes ago as stated: Scheduled delivery date - Wednesday, 13/05/2026. Updated yesterday to 14/05/26 Very well packed with the papers and box The tsuba was wrapped in tissue inside the box with a pillow (normally a no no) but in this case there was no damage 8 pages (what a pain for the auction house) with an interesting comment: This artworks are exempt from Reciprocal Tariffs' under chapter 99 Secondary Classification 9903.01.32, as informational materials. These goods are ART antiques and more than 100 years old. HS code: 9705100090 I was surprised that I didn't have to pay import duty A very nice Kanayama tsuba, good condition with a lovely patina, with papers, just so pleased I wish the best to other buyers from this auction and I hope you are as happy as me with your purchase -

Great tsuba

This is from the Birmingham Museum which I photographed quite a few years ago so I can't really comment

Thanks Jean Lets see if there are any more comments and then I'll decide which term I will use
-
For my records I use the definition Kanagushi (tachi) Looking at this term again it looks like these alternatives are a better description a) Tachi Kanagushi b) Tachi Kanagu Shi Is a or b the most suitable definition?
