  2. Best to research further into Soshu-Den and Masamune before purchasing anything, unfortunately new collectors are the prime target for such forgeries. In the unlikely event a true Goro Masamune was offered to the open market (not ebay or yahoo auctions), it would be hundreds of thousands of dollars. https://markussesko.com/2015/03/20/masamune-his-work-his-fame-and-his-legacy/ https://nihonto-museum.com/blog/goro-nyudo-masamune
  3. I’ve never posted here so I really appreciate any help you can give me on this. I recently purchased this sword on eBay and it was advertised by a seller with an excellent record of being an authentic WW2 Japanese sword. However when it arrived today I immediately became suspicious because the part underneath the wrappings on on the handle that is supposed to be ray skin looks like a plastic strip to me. Also I didn’t feel like markings on the tang looked engraved or stamped, they just seemed off. However I then started second guessing myself and thought maybe this is just what happens with age to one of these and the fact that I don’t know a whole lot about swords to begin with. So any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

    My First Sword

I was thinking Kanbun by shape... better photos will be required. Nakago looks bizen shape, without better photos I would venture Bungo. Congratulations on your sword amd venturing into Nihonto.
  6. Hi John, Dou is metal covered with either leather or laquer or both. Uwe, can you elaborate on the unfortunate feature? Damage or a repair? Also roughly early 1800's? Are there any areas or sections I can photograph that would help? Many thanks for taking the time to enlighten me, much appreciated. Regards Mike.

  8. Here are a few nice "Ichi" kakijiku by other Shodo masters. I think that Kobayashi's flying white brushwork has more movement and dynamism. Adachi Taido Seibu Bunjo
  9. Sorry to hear of Dr. Stein’s passing. I definitely enjoy his work. I’ve been reading JSI and NMB for years.
  10. There was one other Masamune Naotsuna Nanbokucho blade that caught my eye that I couldn’t tell if it was authentic or not that was thinking could be the one.
  11. Thank you and I value all your input … perhaps wishful thinking indeed that something like that would be for sell on the open market

  13. If you have been studying for 40 years, you may have guessed your not EVER going to find one of thoses on the open market
  14. At any given time this sellers inventory rivals that of the Tokyo Museum, and all for pennies on the dollar....
  15. Really bad Japanese images but it is most likely a real shinshinto blade. The rest is a cute story.
  16. My childhood dream to own an authentic Masamune sword for now for over 40 years since playing final fantasy on the NES. I don’t know if it’s the real deal or another fake . Any insight is appreciated, will donate.
  17. I personally dislike the patina and iron colour. Something fishy
  18. Thanks. I needed a good laugh today! I didn't realize April First came twice this year.
  19. Well first thing is they are not Karigane [Wild geese 雁金 ] they are Herons [Sagi サギ]. Geese and cranes don't have the feathered crests. The design is well known. There are even cast coppies getting about [not the ones featured on ebay which are iron and appear to have been mounted] I think I would agree with Thomas - a bit expensive. https://www.seiyudo.com/tu-010213.htm

  21. I am somewhat skeptical that these are a real daisho and not two similarly themed pieces put together . The workmanship on one looks better than on the other .
  22. Personally I don't think this is great work and 1300 Euro is a lot for these two...
  23. I think second kanji is different, but it is Soshu, it can be Meiji/Showa, or it can be like end of Muromachi with a cleaned nakago. Light from above is the worst, usually photography is done in dark room with light on a side.

    My First Sword

Unfortunately it is a dark sword... in a dark room. I would add to photography suggestions - dark room but light source on a side. Sufficient size light source to highlight the blade.
