Certainly looks like habaki to me.  Rather unusual for tsuba motif.  Could the 4 (shi) combined with the geometry imply "death on the cross"?  I wouldn't rule it out.

It is by no means top quality work, probably backyard made?

Thomas this is the ura view - all the images in the auction are upside down. [Which always annoys me and is often an attempt to hide something.]

If they were trying for the 'real' habaki look the slanting 'rain' lines should have been on the lower part of the habaki nearest the tsuba - I am no expert on habaki but that is what turns up on most visual searches.

And maybe someone's first attempt at it, too?  It appears contrived to me.  And if the habaki are trying for Kaga style, shouldn't they have five notches instead of three?
