Ron STL Posted August 29, 2020 Report Posted August 29, 2020 Here is an 18" 3-sided yari with rather strange piercings along with the hori on it. One of our local guys brought this over for discussion a couple days ago. The yari is unsigned but could be sue-koto. None of us have ever seen this done to a yari before and while extreme and a bit strange, it has meaning to the owner who had this done to it. It would be interesting to see if anybody out there has seen something similar or would have an answer to what this symbolism truly represents. Ron STL Quote
ROKUJURO Posted August 29, 2020 Report Posted August 29, 2020 Looks like a modern phantasy item to me. Quote
ChrisW Posted August 29, 2020 Report Posted August 29, 2020 I think its a real yari, but someone has taken this to a drill press and carved it up like a Christmas ham. Quote
Shugyosha Posted August 30, 2020 Report Posted August 30, 2020 The long keri kubi suggests koto (if that hasn't been messed with) otherwise what Chris said. Quote
ROKUJURO Posted August 30, 2020 Report Posted August 30, 2020 I don't think you can make a 'NAKAGO' like that from a traditionally formed YARI NAKAGO. There isn't simply enough 'meat' (read: steel) left Quote
Dave R Posted August 30, 2020 Report Posted August 30, 2020 It reminds me of that odd sword posted a couple of weeks back. Quote
ChrisW Posted August 30, 2020 Report Posted August 30, 2020 It does that for me too Dave! And it may have been that way originally.. but I think it was clumsily 'enhanced' by he who knows not but knows how to somewhat operate a drill press. Quote
Ron STL Posted August 31, 2020 Author Report Posted August 31, 2020 Thanks for your impressions of this strange yari. It is truly a forged yari with a narrow hamon still visable and likely (based on the long kiri kubi), sue koto. The nakago is made like a yari's nakago, but these drillings would had definitely weakened it, I would think. These drillings appear to had been done a long time ago and are not something added using a drill press as mentioned. I agree it resembles a fantasy yari and the creation of somebody's imagination. Not a pretty thing for sure, just a curiosity. This is why I posted it, to see if it just might have some honest background in Japan. I wonder what that "odd sword posted" was about. Must have missed reading that post. Ron STL 2 Quote
ChrisW Posted August 31, 2020 Report Posted August 31, 2020 Check a topic I posted, you'll find it there. It has somewhat similar gouges in the center of the blade. Quote
Geraint Posted August 31, 2020 Report Posted August 31, 2020 Dear All. I think the original horimono, kusabi hi, is something sometimes seen on yari. What has happened to this one since is anybody's guess. I don't think it has a connection to the "horror mono" on the sword that was posted a while ago. All the best. 1 Quote

Surfson Posted September 1, 2020 Report Posted September 1, 2020 Ron, maybe it's from a counterculture enthusiast that used it for piercings?! Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted September 1, 2020 Report Posted September 1, 2020 Glad someone else noticed that, Hamfish. Yeah, that would make a nice navel piercing, Bob. Or, maybe a bit lower.... 1 Quote
kotachi Posted September 2, 2020 Report Posted September 2, 2020 This horimono kind of reminds me of a wakizashi on ebay right now, supposedly demonic themed? It was discussed in this thread I don't know about all that other stuff going on though. -Jay Quote
Gakusee Posted September 3, 2020 Report Posted September 3, 2020 What a pity someone defaced an omi yari like that. Quote
