No doubt used by several families, Victor Harris at the British Museum suggested that it was possibly the Sakai family mon. The sword that I had had a blade signed by Asano Kanezane complete with his kakihan. I do not recall if the blade was dated unfortunately. However, the blade though bearing his mei, I do not think was made by Kanezane, I think it was actually made by one of his students. I have had a couple of really beautiful blades by Kanezane, and this wasn't one of them. 3 Quote

SteveM Posted June 11 Report Posted June 11 2 hours ago, The Blacksmith said: No doubt used by several families Yes, its usually pointless to try to assign a mon to one specific family, unless you have a provenance for the sword (a surrender tag, etc...). Another site suggests this crest was used by the following families. Oddly enough, it lists neither Abe or Sakai as a possibility (but this list is not exhaustive);
Lareon Posted June 23 Report Posted June 23 Not a manji but an ura manji / swastika I've seen it before from Hawley, I don't have his book but I've seen it once or twice before. 1 Quote
Lareon Posted June 23 Report Posted June 23 Front cover actually Ive read that Suda Chikamitsu used the ura manji as his symbol but I've only one source on that. 1 Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted June 24 Report Posted June 24 The Hachisuka family of Awa, Tokushima, were famous for this Kamon. One branch of the Hachisuka family used it in reverse. You can see examples of both in the Tokushima Prefectural Museum. 1 1 Quote

Pav Posted June 25 Report Posted June 25 Sorry confused now. Are those two different Mons or its the same Mon used by two families? I know Kasai clan split up in some period of history Quote
SteveM Posted June 25 Report Posted June 25 16 minutes ago, Pav said: the same Mon used by two families Kamon are used by multiple, often unrelated families. Impossible to tell who owned a sword just by looking at the mon (unless it is an extremely unique mon, but even then you would want some corroborating provenance). 4 Quote

Bugyotsuji Posted Thursday at 04:54 PM Report Posted Thursday at 04:54 PM Ken katabami, Ukita. The large Ukita contingent (who lost as part of the western forces at the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600) would surely have lost credibility post battle and become homeless ronin. 1 Quote
