Here are some pics of my tanto saya that some of you might have seen already. I've posted some close ups for texture(one uploaded sideways but zoom in for detail)

as its somewhat textured.

 

The last pic of the Mon is a little dusty and for some reason my phone is acting weird and I cannot find the non dusty pic.

Worth reviving this thread. Some wonderful workmanship on display here. This is one of my favourite finishes supposedly mimicking insect wear, a technique called mushi-kuinuri.

 

Stunning piece in real life.

Oh, nearly forgot this one.  Its a wakizashi saya with minute scratches in the black lacquer imitating wood grain.  I've heard/read a rat's tooth is used for this type of work.

Heres another. Dont know the Japanese term but the seller described it as "tree bark" texture.

 

I think its supposed to resemble pine bark, like the way if flows as if the saya is a tree trunk.

 

Picture dont show it but it has like a red hue colour under the black which pops out under light.

This rather colourful koshirae accompanied a Norishige wakizashi. It was made in 1974, with urushi and maki-e work by Sato Shisen at age of 73. Born in 1902 and a disciple of Rokkaku Shisui. Apparently these took 3 months to complete.

This is a quaint little tanto I picked up a while back.

The dark brown urushi is almost sculpted in a three dimensional way.
