Fuuten Posted October 15, 2016 Report Posted October 15, 2016 There's a really good documentary about this, focusing on how the wooden constructions were really effective against earthquakes, and of-course focusing on that famous 5 story pagoda (sorry i can't recall the name of the pagoda or documentary right now). Not to mention its just gorgeous to see. Thanks for the link, those gifs really explain the incredible diverse sets of techniques. Edit: to add: What was so interesting was that the joinery allows the building to move. When properly applied of-course, but in case of an earthquake certain sets of walls and support beams were allowed to slide slightly which allowed the whole structure to survive even the heavier quakes. There was an animation of the 'sliding' of the beams, that was quite good. 1 Quote

I hope you have some very very sharp chisels too!! These seem that they need to be carved by a razor blade's precision Quote

Greg F Posted October 15, 2016 Report Posted October 15, 2016 Great find Gordon thank you for sharing this. Its difficult to comprehend how they came up with these designs. Axel I've seen the same doco and can't remember the name either unfortunately but it is definitely worth a watch. Greg Quote
Gordon Sanders Posted October 15, 2016 Author Report Posted October 15, 2016 Thanks, Guys... I enjoy finding interesting items on the webz. Honestly, though, these joining concepts, are the wooden version of origami!!! Quote
Brian Posted October 15, 2016 Report Posted October 15, 2016 I found this a few days ago, and couldn't wait to show it to Nix, as she loves woodwork. Both of us were blown away...seriously mindblowing. Are there small wooden objects made with joints like this for sale anywhere? 1 Quote

Ken-Hawaii Posted October 16, 2016 Report Posted October 16, 2016 My wife is the woodworker of the family, & I'm giving her that PDF with some trepidation. Our chisel & saw collection is pretty good, but it looks like it will be expanding! Thanks, Malcolm. Ken 2 Quote
