A member just sent me a poll idea that I think is interesting. Since it is anonymous, feel free to post your answers on it, and we will have a good idea of where the market lies and where our members stand on Nihonto purchases. We'll make this one about swords only, and will do a tsuba one later if there is a decent response.

Maybe I should add a monthly income poll.....

Forget it....... Those with high enough and complex enough income structures to be able to afford nihonto between 5 and 20k will be unlikely to tell the truth........ particularly after massaging the facts for the benefit of various tax departments in diverse countries.

Some of the lies would make interesting reading though. :D

Hi all, hi Brian,

that was a nice idea, it came like i would expected.

And what about prognosis for the future, how will the market develop?

More and more swords come into existence, hopefully not so many will get destroyed.

Hmmm? What you guys think could be the conclusion? :D

Best wishes!

Children of the post war baby boom, many retired and enjoying pensions, perhaps this is what is reflected?

But we are assured that since the bubble burst and Lehman collapsed and shocked us, the middle classes have been gouged leaving only the mass poor and the super rich. Perhaps this graph would change with a younger demographic. Maybe we need three separate graphs, one for 20's & 30's, one for 40's and 50's and one for 60's and above. Or should I get my coat?

A few personal reasons:

1) its a buyers market right now.

2) sellers are willing to take payments over time allowing me to get into higher quality nihonto.

3) the vast amounts of info at my fingertips is endless and instant allowing me to make better choices.

4) dealers take the time to answer all 40 emails

In response to the intention to buy survey...can I just ask about the reason to buy?

Can the survey respondents who intend to pay $50,000 to $50,000+ for their next sword tell us what factors make their next sword worth this price?

I mean, will this sword be so technically superior to any other sword that it is worth this premium? What is it that "envalues" them?

Just curious.

Everyone is in the market, just some of us cannot afford to purchase anything :)

But not having money doesn't mean we wouldn't purchase something if we could. ;)

George you have a good point about 50k pieces.....as a new collector i would be lucky to tell the difference between a 25k sword or a 50k sword, i look to the market, the market always dictates and advice of dealers and more experienced collectors.

anything is only worth what someone is willing to pay.

George, are you able to make the difference between the work of some painters like Coppenolle, Hervé, Péchaubes and those of Manet or Van gogh ?

Hoping to score bit under 5k mark, possibly bit over it after the taxes I will have to pay, but most likely I can't afford a purchase this year (hopefully next year). Well as a student this is a lot more than I should spend on swords but you just can't fight the passion. :) The upside of taking a lot of time to save for a piece is that I make a lot of choosing and studying on the meantime. I currently have a "wishlist" of about 5-6 different swords that I keep an eye out for. Hoping that they will still be around when I have saved enough. Of course during the saving some drop off the list when I find to me more appealing swords.

But I agree there are so many good deals to my eyes around, that given the financial opportunity I would immidiately snatch one of those swords in my list. Choosing which one of those I'd actually want would be another tricky thing, so many good swords around. :)

Hi,

Jacques, are you able to tell us what makes Roy Lichtenstein's "Woman with Flowered Hat" worth $56,100,000? (sold last month at Christies).

Hmm... someone bought that painting at the price of one thousand Juyo and Tokubetsu Juyo blades...

Or how about buying this:

at the price of 20 Tokubetsu Juyo blades?

In terms of artistic and historical value, nihonto offers incredible value for money (if I just had enough...)
