  3. $4,500 OBO: 1 very rare South Manchuria Railroad Company Mantetsu World War II Japanese Samurai sword. This South Manchuria Railway Company katana would make an important addition to any collection. The nakago/tang is marked with a rare railroad rail symbol. The reverse side is dated. Here is an excerpt from an article, 'Some of the mantetsu blades made in the Dairen Railroad factory may bear the stamp of the Manchuria Railroad company. These were made in the late 1930's and are considered relatively rare.' This sword was made in 1944. It has the Dairen stamp--with the rare railroad rail stamp beneath it. This stamp is exceedingly rare. The blade measures 26 3/8" (67.0 cm) from blade tip to notch in the blade spine. Condition: This vintage World War II Japanese Mantetsu sword is in good condition. The boshi is visible on both sides of the kissaki (blade tip section). The blade edge is excellent with no mentionable nick. There are occasional tiny finish scratches, and some staining. There is some light pitting on the kissaki. This sword will polish beautifully. The blade is perfectly straight. The fittings are excellent. The habaki and the lock release button are gone. A replacement habaki can be made--let me if you want help arranging that.

  5. The blade was made by the 2 Million Yen swordsmith Kanenobu. The blade has kanji on both sides--one side refers to the god of archery and war. The other refers to a joining of Shinto and Buddhist theologies. Literally each side reads as follows: Kasuga Daimyôjin (春日大明神): The numinous unit of the associated kami and buddhas/bodhisattvas of the Kasuga-Kôfukuji multiplex, Nara. and Hachiman Daibosatsu (八幡大菩薩): The god of archery and war incorporating both elements from shintô and Buddhism. The blade measures 26 3/4" (67.9 cm) from blade tip to notch in the blade spine. This sword has a complex, wavy hamon. Condition: This Special Order Japanese WW2 Samurai Army Officer's sword is in excellent condition. There are a few small nicks in the blade edge--the biggest of which is 1/32". The blade has occasional carbon patina. The nicks and patina staining will all come out during polish. The hamon and boshi are perfectly healthy. This sword is guaranteed against fatal flaws. As mentioned, this sword will polish beautifully if desired--it is perfectly collectible and displays beautifully right now. $3750 obo

  15. Hi All, I have been asked to carve a Bokuto from a war capture sword. This sword was obtained directly from the returned soldier who obtained it, so I believe it is genuine. I think it is by Ido Hidetoshi, who worked out of Seki Before and into WW2. It has an interesting shape, and is between a Wakisashi and Katana in length, but perhaps with the shape of a Katate Uchi(?). From the various Bokuto I have carved from it in Australian hardwoods, it handles and feels balanced as a one haded sword I will post initial pics, if more are required (perhaps the full tang?) forgive me, I will take and post them as soon as possible. All the best, and thanks in advance, Stu Smith
  16. For Sale: Difficult-to-find Japanese WW2 South Manchurian Railway katana. This sword has been described by some as the 'Prototype' Mantetsu sword--these were the first Mantetsu. This sword was made in spring of 1939--the last months that Mantetsu were marked with the symbol of the South Manchurian Railway. Like their eventual change to Mantetsu swords in 1939, these Railway symbol-marked swords have an 'N574' (or other Arabic/numeric combination) on the mune. They have the suguha temper line. This sword is offered at AUCTION in my Store on eBay. The auction ends this Sunday evening. Between now and the day before the auction is scheduled to end, I will consider trade plus cash offers for this sword. The cash-only price is $4995 firm. If I am to take a trade plus cash for the sword, remember that I will need to sell the sword trade-in--so would need a trade/cash equivalent of greater than $5k. Cash is king in this case. 20. Hi, first of all 'kudoss' & congrats on the site. I'm a first timer..so pls be gentle. Sorry in advance for a thread. To the job at hand, I inherited from great grandfather a ww2 sword many a year ago. I remember the day as a kid, him showing & telling me all the stories. From that very first day as a kid, (think I claimed it!) I always kept my eye on it. Now 40ish, I blew the dust of it 3-4 mths ago & thought I'd give it another look. My dad's m8 had a go long ago & told us 'it's nothing, military made, standard thing pumped out in the day, not worth 1-2 hundred maybe, cr*p!..' and that's what my dad thought ever since, but not me i still though mine(only seen a cool sword). Here's what I've got so far, the mei (i hope!) is Noshu ju Kanenobu & was made in showa period march 1944. The blade is shinto style and tachi in length at a little over 27". The nakago is star & arsenal stamped + 'ho' stamped on mune. Slight gunome hamon, bit rough, but still sharp as 70 odd yrs on, since sharpened!. In shin-gunto type-3 military mount. It came with a tag, since learnt possible surrender tag(thought name tag).. That's where I'm part stuck.. So far I've got, Rikugun shoi, army sec.sub lieutenant, Okazaki eiiki? eiichi? aichi? Thats all I got. Anyone that would be able to translate it & check the mei+date & be able to tell a little more info. on sword 2 cross reference mine(so i can tell my dad it's not the cr*p sword like he thinks). Since I live in the land of kangaroos & koalas (Aust.) I would love to have the blade professionally sharpened & polished, but am very limited on options. Would anyone know of someone that can be trusted to do the job?!?(I know really only Japan) but you got to ask. Is the blade worth the polish? Or? is the polish worth more than the blade?! Pls post reply, any info. is all good. Sorry again for length of thread. Cheers, check out pics.

  22. I believe there are some fans of Shibata on the board. Just in case you haven't seen it, take a peek. http://www.samuraishokai.jp/sword/16119.html I have no affiliation with the site, but have bought a couple nice swords from him and the transactions went smoothly. I'd buy from them again.
  23. I hope someone can help me. I read Sadaroku. On the nakago is a star stamp and a number. The nakago looks very clean. I din't find out if Sadaroku was a swordsmith of yasukuni shrine, so is this blade traditionell made? What does the signature mean. Pictures are a little big. The blade looks lovely for me. The koshirae is not very eye catching.
  24. WW2 Japanese officers type 98 Shin-Gunto Nakago: Signed Emura Saku, maker of medium to high grade gendaito. With dent where it was struck by a bullet in battle. Blade: Is nice and straight, no bends. 65.6 cm from top of nakago to kissaki with a nice straight suguha hamon, blade in wartime polish with a very occasional spot of light pitting and one very small nail catcher nick less than 1mm just below the kissaki. The saya is painted a sandy brown colour and is in very good condition, without any scratches or dents. Locking mechanism also in good working order. The fittings are excellent quality, the tsuba, seppa and fuchi all have matching numbers ‘8’. The ito wrap is very nice and tsuka has brass fittings, including sarute with cherry blossom. The Tsuka is a replacement to the blade but is original and fits perfectly, the original Tsuka was damaged in battle by a bullet and we be included with the sword as a extra bit of added history. £1500 includes tracked postage within Europe. Item will be packaged in correct manner with lots of padding for protection in transit. Europe only, check laws of your country to make sure you can import swords. Buyer is solely responsible for confiscation, loss or damage of item.
  25. All, It dawned on me, since the Japanese Sword Index is now maintained by the NMB, that we could now expand/update the oshigata database to include more examples of existing smiths as well as add some that are missing. This site was vital for me as a new collector, when I had a rather paltry book collection - mainly Slough's, and I still occasionally visit it when trying to help newer members here quickly/when mobile. I think it would be excellent if we could update this site and that it would be beneficial not just for us, but for others in the community that are looking for information on Showa era smiths. Is there any support or willingness to take on this update? I would be happy to assist in anyway possible.
